I've been a Vegetarian for about two years now and I do it for both health and ethical reasons. But I'm not one of those crazy vegheads. The majority of my friends are omnivores (if not carnivores) and I'm fine when they eat meat in front of me. It's their choice to eat meat and fish, and it's mine not to.

I'm a meat eater and I still have a problem with that rationalization.

Same here. If you care enough to choose vegetarianism for ethical reasons then how can you just not care at all about what your friend eat and why? Don't get me wrong I hate getting preached at by my friends, but there is a happy medium.

....I wrote out a really long rant about BJ's little post but then I realized everything I said was already blatantly spelled out.

I abstain from eating red meat on the basis that it tastes like shit.

Peskatarian have not been able to go with out sushi since I got pregnant over 3 years ago. I went Vegan when I became a Buddhist. But I do not have a problem with what other people eat or how they go about getting their meat. In fact, if I go to Tool for advice they say "life feeds on life". Funny how people forget plants respond to music, light and touch too.

Oy, plants are however not sentient. Even in Buddhist canon you can't be reincarnated as a plant, but any given animal most definitely your mother in a past life.

Sentient or not was not the question, but a good point none the less. I was just bring up life feeding on life and there is no way around it. I am Buddhist as a way of life, but refer to science on the matter of plant or animal in the next. We all break down to atoms, carbon mostly so Yes I could be a plant, animal or inanimate object even. If we are going by science not faith.

But you mentioned in your intro that you place faith in karma, so why science here and not science there?

Karma is me still griping to some remnants of faith or more tongue in cheek. Also I do not believe science has all the answers just Man's little helper. More important is that I am libertarian (not the political party but the philosophy) so I believe everyone can make their own choices and I should not push my beliefs on others. Sharing is not pushing.

I'm pretty sure that the machines used to harvest veggies run over a shit ton of field mice, snakes, squirrels and other animals/insects so the whole 'going veggie for ethical reasons' reads as complete bullshit to me.

Unless you're growing them yourself, picking them by hand and not using pesticides.

Ah, but most crop goes to feeding livestock (like 90% of the world's soy crop for example), so going vegetarian/vegan reduces deaths of animals in the way of farm machinery. Nice try though.

You logic is valid but not sound. The numbers of animals killed by a vegetarian diet society are overwhelmingly less than a meat-eating society.

My logic is that everyone should just haz a cheeseburger and a smile.

Becoming vegetarian doesn't prevent some huge decline in the slaughter of animals, doesn't stop hunters from hunting and really doesn't do anything but give some people a reason to look down their noses at others.

Its true, I didn't go vegan for my religion, because I didn't want to take part in the senseless slaughter of animals, because I have IBS, I did it for the smug sense of self satisfaction and to look down on someone who had thirty posts on a forum until they decided one day to post thirty more for some inane reason.

And my being nice to strangers doesn't make world peace. I guess I should just be a jerk instead.
