The unfortunate reality is regardless of enforcement, criminals will use guns inappropriately.
I see in my crystal ball that in the near future this problem will be solved in a technological fashion, e.g. tracking systems, spectroscopic sensors that can detect a few mere molecules of gunpowder, data mining and extrapolation using chaos theory etc. Kind of like the way they track and predict cash money travels.

My guess is that Police and Military would still be exempt from any and all measures thought up though...right?

But police are still authorized to carry a weapon off duty (Usually a smaller version of their primary sidearm,in the same caliber if possible and available).

Because attacks can happen at any time and crime doesn't take a break.
Also if a primary sidearm worn by uniformed officer is taken in a scuffle they need something to get their primary weapon back before they are shot with it.

But the same holds true if said officer needs a firearm because {insert violent attack}in public happens while they are out with their families while off duty.
Remember Police Officers are still considered a Civilian force (or started out that way at least).
Why deny any law abiding fellow citizen the right to do the same?

If it is mandatory then that removes free choice from the matter,and I would rather it remain an individuals free choice to be armed or not.

I think everyone should have a gun, but bullets should be REALLY EXPENSIVE.
Like $1000 per round.
That way you'd REALLY have to think about whether or not killing that dude who stepped on your shoes is worth it.

What about the mugger that might want those nice shoes and the money in your wallet/purse?
What if he/she didn't want to leave a witness?
What about target practice,I mean one would need to become very accurate very quickly under those rules.
What about the poor/low income folks that couldn't afford ammo for the weapon?
They would just be S.O.L. right?
