Injured good Samaritan ticketed for jaywalking

http://tinyurl.com/d6anmz

DENVER – A good Samaritan who helped push three people out of the path of a pickup truck before being struck and injured has gotten a strange reward for his good deed: A jaywalking ticket.

Family members said 58-year-old bus driver Jim Moffett and another man were helping two elderly women cross a busy Denver street in a snowstorm when he was hit Friday night.

Moffett suffered bleeding in the brain, broken bones, a dislocated shoulder and a possible ruptured spleen. He was in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

The Colorado State Patrol issued the citation. Trooper Ryan Sullivan said that despite Moffett's intentions, jaywalking contributed to the accident.

Moffett had been driving his bus when the two women got off. In the interest of safety, he got out and, together with another passenger, helped the ladies cross.

Moffett's stepson, Ken McDonald, said the driver of the pickup plowed into his stepfather, but not before Moffett pushed the two women out of the way.

When he awoke in intensive care, he learned of the ticket. "His reaction was dazed and confused. I was a little angry," said McDonald.

The other man also was cited for jaywalking, while the pickup driver was cited with careless driving that led to injury. Sullivan said the two elderly women haven't been cited but the investigation is ongoing.

And people wonder why so many people have such a low opinion of police these days.

Jaywalking contributed to the accident? That's nuts!

The person who issued those tickets needs to have his head examined. -_-;;;

Indeed. Policing is dying these days.

When there are REAL crimes being committed like murders and rapes, these cops are wasting precious time, energy, and your tax dollars in this shallow "investigation"! How low can cops be? I don't know. But my opinion for police just sank a little bit more.

However, I commend that chap who saved those old folks.

Maybe he wouldn't have had to push people out of the way if he was crossing where you're supposed to.

Traffic laws, for the most part, aren't bullshit.
If you ignore them, you get hurt.

He should get a ticket.

If grandma could barely see and was determined to cross right there and then, the younger fellow accompanying her may not have had much of a choice; either follow her and make sure she gets across safely, or watch her get killed.

I'm sure if the guy could do it over again, he'd still do the same thing, despite the jaywalking ticket and all.

That's not what happened. Either read the article or stop posting.

How much is a jaywalking ticket? $250 or some shit?

Dude, you probably saved two people's lives. A few broken bones and $250 is a small price to pay for that.

I did read the article. And, while they technically were jay-walking, I fail to see how that "contributed to the accident".

It "contributed to the accident" because they were crossing the street in a place where drivers don't expect it. Granted, drivers should be vigilant, but so should pedestrians. And in a snow storm, it's not very easy to see.

The whole paternalistic "we'll punish you so that you won't get hurt" laws are still bullshit, no matter how you see it.
You guys are saying this because everyone got out alive. If the old woman had died and you cast all blame on her, well, you'd be assholes.

Not really.
It's illegal to ride a bike on a highway because YOU CAN DIE.
It's illegal to do a Chinese fire drill because YOU CAN DIE.
It's illegal to jay walk because YOU. CAN. DIE.

If you choose to disobey those laws, and you die, it's your own fucking fault.
Would it be better if cars just flung themselves out of the way of one moron who thinks it's her fucking world and cause crashes?
No. Cross where you fucking should.

Actually jaywalking is only illegal in America. In Europe, we just cross wherever - law here states the minute a pedestrian leaves the curb they have the right of way.

Laws here favour those who walk and or bike.

They generally do here, too, but there are some streets where it just doesn't make sense to let pedestrians cross wherever they want.

It's not safe for it to be legal for pedestrians to cross a road that's 40 MPH.

40 isn't really that fast. I would actually cross a road that has a 40 mph speed limit.

It's fast if you're hit, which is the point.

If it was a snowstorm, then the driver should be driving at a slow pace. If they had to jump out of the way, then that implies that the driver was going too fast in a snowstorm. That means he is a moron who has no sense. You don't fucking drive at 40 mph in a snowstorm.

Exactly. So why the fuck should I be punished for risking it?
Am I now not able to make decisions if it's too risky? How the fuck is this a counterargument to my opinion?

You should be punished because you're not only endangering yourself.
You're endangering the people in the car.

Although that is valid it is entirely a different justification for certain laws that "because you could hurt yourself"

True, but this country is big on that kind of thing. I never said I agreed with that, I said I agreed that you're a prick if you jaywalk, and you should be punished.

I don't really give a fuck if you hurt yourself, but you can hurt others. In fact, this man in particular nearly did.
