Thanks for the outstanding compliments guys. I love doing stuff like that last one, it's far more relaxing because you don't really have to worry about getting much of anything wrong. There's so much that can go awry when you've got humans, or animal, or still lives as a subject but words and colors are kind of hard to totally screw up

WOW, Nike. I love it. The first is my favorite, I think. I wish I could sketch like that!

Beautiful work Nike!! I'm impressed!

So anyone with alittle photoshop knowledge (or perhaps alot of photoshop knowledge) want to give me some pointers on hair? I'm working on the following picture but I'm not impressed with the hair... I am excited that my skill with photoshop (after a 6-7 month hiatus) may have improved.. the completed portion took 25-30 mins versus the hour and a half it used to take... (plus I did it with a touchpad vs. my wacom tablet)...suggestions??

thank you for your feedback :-)

I have never drawn anything manga-like, so I don't know if I have a lot of useful advice here. Generally, I use to paint in photoshop the same way I do using traditional media. I start with a general shape in a darker midtone using a big brush, then I set shadows and highlights, then some details.
I think in your pic (I really like it, by the way :-) ) it might help to clearly define a light source - the texture for the hair itself is nice, but the light and shadow areas seem to be put a bit inconsequently in my opinion. It's one of the many many problems I have to work on, too....we had some great lessons about light theory, contrast theory at a workshop I participated last year - and one of the istructors said that with contrast, you create drama, you make the piece interesting.

hope that helps,

cheers

Thanx much for the aide. I'm going to school shortly (July) so this issue with lighting and contrast may solve itself but I will do some further study on my own as you suggest.. I agree that it would bring some life to the character.

Very nice, Sanctus!

I'm with Nike. There is a very strong amount of contrast when it comes to hair. When you get done with details, just open up the Curves dialogue box, and then give the wire a slight S-curve to create a very nice and well balanced contrast.

If you PM me, I'll give you details, and some examples.

I think it's fine, Sanctus. Very nice.

The only thing i can think of is to continue the shadow and highlights down the length of the hair and the rest of her body. That might be what's throwing you off.

I loves betta fishies. As for the painting...I dunno about that assessment so much, especially considering the fact that those fish are colored pencil, if that's what you were going based off of...Actually...I need to figure out how to better photograph my acrylic work, so speaking of which:

Does anybody who photographs their canvas works have any tips? I just have hit and miss luck with it, and it's getting -very- frustrating...

This is a little person that I did in paint today, during my computer class. It's just a little scribble done in the last 10mins of class.

Don't I have to say his name three times?

The Ganagetcha would make a bad-ass tattoo.

Well, you've already said it twice...bwahahaa, you're well on your way to getting gotten...and yes...it would make quite the bad-ass tattoo if I did it up a bit neater, scribbling in Japanese class doesn't make for the neatest of things, though it was meant to be scribbly in any case

Actually, the scribbly-ness of it is what makes the Ganagetcha so cool and unique looking.

Wait, I said it three times...

... AAHHHH!!! SOMEONE HEL-

This site has some talented but, to my mind, not overly original art pieces.
I just really like this sculpture:

Well, as Paul Gaugin said, "All art is either plagiarism, or revolution"

Besides, this is a thread mostly for resident artists. Not for other peoples art.

Not bragging on myself, but I highly doubt that the last piece I posted could be called anything but original (and slightly wierd).

Wow Morrigan, way to fucking insult..

Every entry I've seen has it's own original style and intent, so honestly unless you have something useful to contribute that doesn't mock the creative abilities of the other members perhaps you should keep your opinions to yourself.

Oh Morrigan, as I forgot to mention, I'm an Art Major, and in my much more professional opinion, every piece that someone posted here, is one of beauty and of the soul. That's all anyone could ask for in an art piece.
