Talking The First Goth Band

It took some research, but I have found the first band termed as "Goth." Now I know what makes Goth different from Punk.

The band is called, "the Birthday Party."

You can read my article, if you like. There is a video, from the band, not me.

You totally neglected to mention Gothicus Maximus' video on the same page below Nick Cave's! (and mine too further down! Thanks for including my vid. )

First off, I'm pretty sure they shared the spotlight with Bauhaus at the time. They certainly weren't 'pre'-Bauhaus by any significant amount of time. Also, I'm pretty sure that the “These Boots are Made for Walking” song you're referring to is a cover of the much more popular Nancy Sinatra song.

That's the thing, bands like the Cure were going on stage as Post-Punk, then suddenly they Goth became the buzz word. Nick Cave is sited many times as the first person called, "gothic." However, after doing research the Birthday Party was sited a gothic. Nick Cave was just there.

Nancy Sinatra? Well it isn't Goth anyway. I didn't look up the video. I think that's when they were the block boys or something.

Well, Siouxsie, The Birthday Party, Bauhaus, and Joy Division all started in '78 or '79. I don't think Sioxsie was Goth yet, though. Well, she sort of was, in a way, but more stylistically than musically at that point.

You'd better stay the fuck away from Tokushima, PoS, or I'll ass-r.ape you with a baseball bat full of nails, then drop a piano on you from 7 stories up!

Seriously though, I think Joy Division was the first band to have a performance of theirs described as "gothic" (in a derisive sense), but 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' by Bauhaus is accepted as the first 'Goth Rock' song.

If that's true than you would agree that he's the forum equivalent of Nighmare's mohawk.

Did you know that back in the sixties both The Doors and Iron Butterfly were refered to as "gothic".

I heard somewhere it was either the Damned or Joy Division. But I don't really care who was the first, pretty much all the bands mentioned in this thread are great.
