Depending on your budget I would say for Distortion the classic Boss DS-1 (used by many famous guitarists) or the Boss Metalzone are good all rounders. The Pro Co Rat is also an excellent pedal too.
For Chorus, You might want to look at the Boss CE-5 which is a brilliant pedal.
One question I have for you Duane is, have you thought of a multi effects pedal such as the Boss ME-50 or if you have a little more to spend the Boss GT 10 which are both fantastic value for money and will give you all the sounds and effects you`ll ever need !!!.
Korg have some brilliant guitar multi effects such as the Korg AX3000 (I have the older AX1500 and its brilliant and has served me well over the years)

I may postpone a gig I'm planning until I'm 21, and have more options venue-wise... I'll flip a coin on the subject.

There are more distortion pedals than you can shake a stick at, but a few good brands are, in order of price (on average)
Digitech - Good if you like a variety of tones from a single pedal.
Boss- Good if you're looking for a few particular tones that are hard to recreate.
MXR - A solid line, good stuff, Mark Morton of Lamb of God uses this
Electro-Harmonix - these are analog, not digital effects, they sound absolutely amazing but are pricey as hell.
As for chorus? Digitech makes good ones, as does Boss. Again, Boss have better singular tones, Digitech is the jack of all trades.
If you're on a tight budget? Danelectro's FAB line are all about 15 dollars a piece, and their chorus is actually very good, along with their Echo, almost on par with Boss. Their distortions leave much to be desired.

I love Seymour Duncan pickups, and the JB is an awesome pick up, I have one in the bridge of my 1986 Charvel Model 6 and its tone is brilliant, I`m thinking of adding a `Cool Rails` single coil to the neck and the middle position as the Model 6 is HSS configuration !!!.

I don't like the feel of Gibson basses, I don't know why. I prefer Fender P-Bass or my beat up Yamaha RBX-270. Got the thing for free, just had to re-adjust the truss rod, the neck was warped a bit.

Do you mean the drop D/Db/C/etc tunings? And no, I don't tune down to make playing easier. I tune down based on what I'm trying to do.

No, I play Drone and Black Doom, so I tune down to A, B or C just because it sounds so damn good.
If someone finds playing hard my advice is simple, practice more.
