Sanctus Dei - I haven't heard much of the Soleil Label, although definitely Dave Sylvian and Projekt are excellent, I have certainly liked what I have heard of Projekt.

Ah yes, Gary Numan. Yum. I know it may sound a trifle pratty and overblown, but that man's music changed my life - musically, anyway. On holiday in Germany, 1979, I heard "Cars" on Radio 1 and was so utterly gobsmacked I couldn't get it out of my head.
But the changey-bit is when I started buying his singles (remember those?) I heard "Photograph" which was the b-side of 'This Wreckage" (the first single I ever bought, and I still have it...somewhere), and sat and cried for half an hour straight. Then I heard his version of one of the Gnossiennes by Satie and became determined to hunt out anything I could find by Satie.
And that's how I started liking 'classical' music. Until that point, classical music had always been that stuff parents listen to, either instrumental and dreary or vocal and screechy. My tastes have broadened and I even like some of the stuff that had previously been so much wallpaper, and all down to that one record. Heck, we even ended up choosing our honeymoon on the basis of loving Mozart!

Yeah, I really didn't start appreciating classical music until I found out that most of the musicians who actually knew how to play music in the bands I loved were classically trained. Besides Numan, Kraftwerk comes to mind... their music has always sounded classically inspired. I was also a big fan of Ultravox whose violinist/keyboardist, Billy Currie was trained to play in the classics.
Probably also it didn't hurt that one of my main sources for finding new bands after MTV slogged off playing any decent music videos was college radio. Once I couldn't find out about new bands on MTV except the 2 hours of videos a week they crammed into 120 Minutes, I started listening to the radio station in New Orleans that the University of Tulane runs http://www.wtul.fm/
Anyways, when the alternative music went off and sometimes a classical music program started I left the radio there and started discovering Bach, Mozart and my personal favorite kind of classical music, harpsichord compositions.

It's interesting what you're both saying about classical music. I wonder if it's a lot more common experience than what people may recognise. I am pretty much the same way, I have always liked classical music but never really developed a good appreciation for it until I knew of other musical artists who were classically trained and Falken, Harpsichord compostitions are great to listen to...I love the sound of the harpsichord, at the moment though I am more into choral/vocal stuff...currently listening to a recording of Benedictine Monks performing vocal compositions from the 13th/14th century

So terribly agreed, I've enjoyed Classical since I t'was a youngen. Bach, Mozart, Wagner, beethoven... etc.. Perhaps that explains my current music selection?!

He was French, lived 1866-1925, and is reputed to have helped 'invent' modern mysic (along with the likes of Debussy). He's pretty much the opposite in style of Mozart, actually. Whereas Mozart was apparently once accused of having 'too many notes' in his music, Satie worked and worked at his pieces until there wasn't a single extraneous note.
He was also a bit of a case too. He wrote little jokey notes for the musician only to see - things like 'as though dreaming of a promotion' and 'wearing a wooden hat'. He was also quirky and terribly shy. One story goes that on a visit to a friend's house, he was too embarrassed to ask where the bathroom was and instead nipped out into the garden when no-one was looking!
A lot of his music is readily available and used quite frequently - in fact, I can guarantee that if you listen to his music, you probably will recognise it!
