To be honest, I don't really like the word "slut" either. I think that if you have your own morals about sex, that's fine - but I don't see sex as a moral issue unless there's some kind of cheating/lying/hurting someone involved. The simple in-out of it has nothing to do with morality in itself, to me, and as such I don't appreciate derogatory labels being applied simply for this. If you call someone a slut you're bascially saying they have a lot of sex, and unless someone's getting hurt I don't really see anything wrong with that.

Well, slut doesn't really bother me as such in the sense that I don't particularly care if someone calls me one, as there's nothing wrong with getting a lot of action (something I've come to realise after a celibate year!). I just don't see why it should be an insult, unless you believe that "sex is dirty". I guess it's more the fact that slut is used as a derogatory label that bothers me. It depends on the context - in dirty talk, anything goes really as long as you're both okay with it. But when you're insulting someone, I guess I just don't think promiscuity is a particularly good reason, unless someone's getting hurt.

Sure, to the individual a word only means as much as you allow it to. But to societies, words are reflective of underlying attitudes, no? Like, queer used to mean gay, as in gay is strange, odd, wrong. Now, I think you could generally say that only people who are being ironic, satirical or ignorant use it in that precise context. Or people for whom the word has lost all of that original context, and become just a word that means homosexual

I think the thin line between disarming the evil or negative connotation of a word and disrespecting other's needs or rules (observing the content regulation the networks must of necessity engage in so some Mother in Kansas isn't forced to explain to little Johnny what the word he just heard on TV means) is important to recognize and respect. The feminists have an overall noble cause, but I believe in this instance they were wrong.

By the way, I think it bears mentioning that offensiveness is in the ear of the beholder. And the world is increasingly populating with very thin skinned people. I am one of those people that will argue vehemently about the importance of using language correctly. But in this life that sends so many real difficulties our way, I think too many people spend too much time and energy fighting battles over words. Yes, sometimes words are very important, but most of the time these things are not worth the breath it takes to argue them.

I think I heard this quote in a Simpson's or Family Guy episode:

"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Well, unless they're engraved on a granite slab and thrown at me."

I'm inclined to agree with the part about respecting the viewers - sure, you could say "why shouldn't cunt be allowed on breakfast TV? What's wrong with a cunt?!" Hey I may try that! But the disappointing thing is, I hear that word most often from girls. In fact, I quite rarely hear it from guys - usually when a girl they reckoned their chances with has copped off with someone else. (It's easy to deal with a guy who calls you that - just look him up and down and say "huh. So even a slut would never fuck you. No wonder you're bitter and sexually repressed.") I find that girls judge one another so much more than they're judged by those of the penis-having persuasion. Damn that Freudian gaping abyss inside that leads us to attack one another in an attempt to assuage our own emptiness!

FGM is wrong on so many levels... the rage I feel when I think about it is profound. The concept is bad enough; the methods are even more atrocious. Calves are castrated in a far more humane manner than what is forced on these girls.
