The Birthday Massacre

Does anyone listen to them too? I LOVE them. They have a retro style and have creepy lyrics. It's goth-tastic!

No. This is a gothic site, so we only listen to Britney Spears.

The Birthday Massacre are alright - I used to really love them when I first heard them 3 or 4 years ago, and still enjoy them every once in a while, particularly Nothing and Nowhere. They're catchy.

Chibi is awesome when she sings in her death metal voice. That's why I love Blue. And Happy Birthday is awesome too.

Mmm...

I like one song by them. But I happen to listen to goth rock. So I'm not really well versed in their work.

Quite fond of them, actually, although I think the newest album wasn't quite up to par with the rest of their work.
I draw a lot of artistic inspiration from their musical style.

I really like "Blue" "Broken" and "Happy Birthday" and they have a couple of other okay songs.
By the way... they're not goth...

I could have sworn they were Gothic. I thought by the sound of Blue they would be. I classified them as a kind of Retro-Goth. Chibi is gothic though, isn't she? Or does she just wear a lot of black and look like it?

They're pretty inspirational though.

As far as I know they are industrial/synth-pop.

Maybe that's why. i listen to a lot of trance, industrial, and gothic music and sometimes get industrial confused with goth. I know Emilie Autumn is also industrial, but she's also gothic. Her songs are victoriandustrial, but she's a Victorian Goth.

OMG, dude... you've got some wicked misconceptions of goth rock. Nothing that you've mentioned is remotely goth in this post and none of it is remotely industrial either.

Check it out, listen to Throbbing Gristle, an industrial band, and compare it to Emily Autumn. After that, compare Miss Autumn to say... R&B or such and see what you get. Emily Autumn is just a prettier version of Betty Curse. An attempt to sell a "gothic" gimmick to make money. It's not in the least bit a goth rock thing.

Also, if you listen to actual industrial and goth rock, I think you would be able to make the distinction quite easily as to which is which.

None of these bands are anywhere near goth?

HIM
The 69 Eyes
Marilyn Manson
Wednesday 13
Draconian
Clan of Xymox
My Dying Bride
Evanescence
Inkubus Sukkubus
Lacrimas Profundere
Sentenced

I know the 69 eyes are a gothic band, and I love the style, but I sometimes can't tell the difference between plain metal and some "gothic" bands I've been told to listen to.

Some of those bands I haven't heard of. Clan of Xymox are darkwave, which is a kind of synth driven cousin of goth rock.

Some claim Inkubus Sukkubus is goth rock, but I've never really heard a metal sounding goth rock band and I.S. does sound really metal for the most part. 69 Eyes... some of their songs could be considered goth from what people have said here. But I treat them like the plague.

If you want to hear the quintessential sound of goth rock, go listen to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, or Siousxie And The Banshees.

There's also a somewhat interchangeable genre known as Deathrock and the ones I'd recommend to start off with on that is Christian Death, Sex Gang Children, and Alien Sex Fiend.

Industrial is a totally different animal all together.

Laibach
Front 242
Throbbing Gristle
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
Cabaret Voltaire
Tommy Stumph

HIM- Alternative rock with shitloads of influences from other genres (ie undefinable.
The 69 Eyes- What KontanKarite said.
Marylin Manson- Mainstream industrial rock/metal (different from industrial)
Wednesday 13- As far as I know punkish metal or vice versa, but consider anything I say about music a lie.
Draconian- metal (Gothic metal is something entirely different from goth rock, btw)
Clan of Xymox- Again, what he said
My Dying Bride- metal
Evanescence- alternative rock/metal with gothic metal influences
Inkubus Sukkubus- Again, what he said
Lacrimas Profundere- Never heard of
Sentenced- Metal

Apparently.
I'm guilty of being a bit of a metalhead, but at least I know and listen to some goth. Lots of people seem to think that metal is goth music.

What is there to be guilty about being a metalhead?

Because I listen to way more metal than I do Goth but still consider myself Goth?

I know some of the music I listen to is Gothic rock/metal, but most of it might be considered industrial/heavy metal.

The thing that distinguishes me as a goth is the way I dress and like to think. Deep philosophical thoughts and dark thoughts. The leather clothes with the straps and buckles, boots, black shirts, dark jeans with chains, dark hair that is growing long. Sometimes I wear heavy eyeliner and white makeup.

Yep. You'd get on my nerves. But sure, that totally would make you a goth I'm afraid. You know, since you're obviously a goth and not... you know, yourself. You were probably born goth.
