While I do believe some sort of placebo effect can occur when you think you're smoking weed but aren't, I've smoked many times when I was alone, or the only one getting high, and still felt it, it's definitely not a social construct.

It seems that the effects of marijuana are similar to anything else. Some folks feel it more keenly than others, and some folks don't feel it at all.

I'm disinclined to try it, but that's mostly for personal reasons.
