Do you consider yourself goth?

So... There's a lot of different people in here, so much as one could wonder if the majority is even gothic.

I try to follow the Gothic subculture, however, I feel that the Gothic subculture is supposed to make one feel more comfortable with oneself. "Goth" is a mere label; you are you foremost and not a group.

Goth is, to me, something that I am very passionate about. I know that it annoys people, and for that I apologize. It's something that I can identify with as an idelology, and something that I feel is strongly apart of me. Though the 'you are you' foremost is granted, one can still feel they belong as a person generally to a subculture, whose foundation is old yet a gem. Thank you for starting this thread, Cyntrox, looked like something needed.

It's ironic that a website called Gothic.net could survive so long without this topic being addressed.

OOohhh... voting... 'Democracy'... collecting statistics on individuals so as to later shove a boot up their assas...

I 'voted' no. I am an individual who admires the 'Goth' 'subculture from the outside, looking in. I am a Metaller (metalhead to those individuals who are not willing to understand the aesthetic of "Metal".

I like Goth. I collect and listen to the music, and do my best to befriend individuals who identify as Goth. Other than that, slide off.

I must be the second guy (after Vyvian, of course) that is the most purist 'gothic apologist' (XD) in the site.
When I'm talking about goths, I generally say 'we' instead of 'goths'.
But I don't call myself a goth relatively often, and when someone asks me if I'm a goth, I just tell them a cool 'I guess.'
Of course, this is because it makes me all the gothier.

I am about as Goth as a waiter at Chili's who wears all black during work, then pulls off the apron after work and keeps wearing black.

HOWEVER...I am closer to goth than almost anyone else my age (that isn't famous, like Siouxsie or Peter Murphy or...). Er...well there are the guys and gals who are into Harley Davidson motorcycles and wear a lot of black leather, who are in their 50's, but they don't wear lace or boots with crosses or Siouxsie shirts...OK, so there are a lot of middle aged folks like me who wear black, but I know more about goth music and gothic romance than...well no, I can't really say that either. OK, I'll stop blathering now. (sighs while thinking how to be unique...)

It's not ironic as most of the conversation on this site is bent torwards defining Goth and defining what is goth. It's beating the spooky, undead horse.

*thwack*

But as to the question at hand?

No, nay, never. Not even remotely Goth. But I love Gothic Literature.

Well, I don't really say "I'm goth"... but I feel that way.

I'm a geek who thinks ravers were hot, decided to investigate this goth thing a bit more, found out I liked it, and stayed.

I like the fashion and literature, but I like the people better. Goths are like geeks, that don't talk about computers.

Yes, but not all the time. I rarely see Jillian discussing C++, old man, I mean Humane, talking about the days of Posix, or Vyvian talking about whether porn is easier to view on Firefox or IE.

There are quite a lot of geek goths. They're the one that say 'It's better than being a plain geek.'

True. I just still don't see deeply involved technical discussions though.

ROFLMAO That was priceless there, Humane.

Like Vyvian said in terms of passion in the subculture, I felt the same way during the late 80's when I grew a deep admiration in the goth subculture.
The romance and creativity of the goth music, fashion and literature all came on to me like a ton of bricks. It was definetly a lifestyle I would feel I can fit in like a glove.
Even though during the late 90's as a Harley-Davidson mechanic, being goth and a biker just didn't work for me. Since I left that field of work, it was much nicer to be in one subculture and not two.

Overall, I would consider myself as goth.

The question goes both ways for me.

My soul and spirit is very gothic and I’ve been that way ever since I can remember but in terms of practicing the culture I’m still learning it. It’s a long story but back in school when I wanted to learn more about the gothic culture my parents wouldn’t let me. Flash forward to 2002 I meet a great guy who taught me many things regarding various sub-cultures including metal, hard rock, new wave, ska and of course goth. I had always been intrigued with goth so he taught me as much as he knew. One day as a surprise he took me to Ipso Facto and as cliché as it is to say I felt like I was home, like I belonged even though at that time barely knew anything about it and I certainly didn’t dress the part. Since then I’ve been trying to absorb as much as possible.

So in answer to the question “Do you consider yourself goth?” I’d have to say yes!

Yeah, I'd say I'm a goth. When people ask I'll usually just say "sure".

I can't imagine being a part of any other fashion or music scene.

well, I think that what labels you are the "normals"´ inquiries...when someone asks you "are you..." then there must be some indication....you know, you won´t ask a chick in white leggins and plastic pink earings whether she is...

but...I have friends that wore black for years...they attended catholic school...teachers were trying to convice them it is the satan that makes them wear black....one (first nd last) day they came to school "colored by technicolor" in latest fashion....I also do this, once in years....I love watching the faces....I love the irony....

...I don´t understand the principle "to become" a goth...I was just keen on different things...later I realized that people called goths enjoy the same constellation...I was delighted...I am delighted that there are such places as this one...

buddhists say that what one needs to achieve enlightment are darhma, sangha and buddha....

sangha, as enviroment of support of similar minds....they don´t lead, just accompany...

I don't think that anyone meeting me on the street would call me goth. I don't consider myself goth. I guess I don't really have any category for myself...maybe I'm more of a geek? I don't know. Anyways, I love Gothic literature and I'm working on a Gothic writing project. There is definitely a "dark place" in my mind even if I don't always convey it to the world.

No, but only because i'm at the age wheres theres not a huge scope for experiment. If anyone asks I'll say yes, but not many of you people would call me goth straight away.
