VIRGINIA BEACH
Police, saying they were responding to citizen complaints, carted away two large promotional photographs from the Abercrombie & Fitch store in Lynnhaven Mall on Saturday and cited the manager on obscenity charges.
Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman, said the seizure and the issuance of the summons came only after store management had not heeded warnings to remove the images.
The citation was issued under City Code Section 22.31, Bernstein said, which makes it a crime to display "obscene materials in a business that is open to juveniles." He did not say what was being done with the pictures and when the manager, whose name was not released, is scheduled to appear in court.

Oh goodness, I can see one gents crack, heaven forbid, because no other store uses as provacative an ad, I just don't know what to do. If I had one of those posters, oh baby, who know what I'd do.
Most kids wouldn't really care if they saw that poster. The reason kids go crazy over things is when adults make a big deal out of it. It's like when your little, you can run around naked with your best friends, and nobody will tell you off, but by the time your about 10, that's a no-no. Society makes a huge deal over little things.

Let me get this straight. It’s ok for women to be shown scantly clad, but when a manly butt crack is involved, it’s obscene?
Ok, so there are a few manly butt cracks out there that shouldn’t be seen.

Removing a poster because it has a buttcrack is stupid, but the other one was understandable.
I can see why people wouldn't want a huge poster of a topless woman in store windows.

*shakes head at the irony*
Taking the pics down because they were offensive? I've seen the exact same ideas pulled off by 100000 other companies. A girl covering her nipples with her hands? Oh my, so offensive and progressive. So original and unique.
Holy shit Virginia is completely fucking lame.

Y'all are killing me!
Like tickingstitch said; its pretty pathetic in VA Beach---there's an local ordinance against swearing and it is INFORCED on the beach proper, especially during "tourist season".
I can tell you some horror stories about VBPD---my 13 yr old got brought home by them last summer for a curfew violation. He was skateboarding with friends and forgot about the time. VBPD brings him home, and he gets a COURT SUMMONS. We go to court; he gets 25 hrs community service. There were kids there, 15-16 yr olds who had been brought in FOR SMOKING. These assclowns have nothing better to do than to bust kids for kid shit; oh, forget about the actual CRIME that goes down---you can score whatever you want in this town, but oh LORD don't be a minor or violate some pathetic 'moral' code.
It gets better (we are also involved in a court trial because my son hit a teacher with a paper wad shot from a rubber band and -- the pathetic tramp is pressing charges: SIMPLE ASSAULT AND BATTERY.)... but that will be a later post....

Virginia Beach has WAAY strict obscenity laws. I lived there for sometime and DJ'ed there often.
It's a crime to use 'vulgar' language in public. You can be arrested if you say something in public if a cop hears it.
You could be walking along talking to yer mates ansay 'thats fucking crazy dude' and the next thing you know your up against a wall being patted down.
Don't laugh, this has happened. More than once.
It gets worse. On the beach cops can arrest you for showing too much skin. No thongs or other swimsuits they consider 'too revealing'. Whats 'too revealing'? It's whatever the cop wants it to mean. They arrest anyone who looks too sexy in a swimsuit, fine them, and if they do it again they put them in jail and get an order to keep them off the beach.
Most of Virginia is like this. Really right-wing Bible thumpin' wack-jobs. I spent many year around them.
From my personal experiences...
A mate of mine worked at a graphic design shop in Roanoke. We used to party in Blackburg - he went to VaTech and I came down from Radford to drink with him on the weekends. He stuck a sticker he made of the Album cover for the single 'Pussy' by Lords Of Acid in the back side window - you know the small triangle shaped window in the back of cars? It was no more than 4"-5".
I was coming home from work one night when I was pulled over by a state trooper. As I sat there, more state troopers and local Blacksburg police arri ved. They came over to me, got my license, registration, etc. went back to their car rang it in. After a few minutes they come back and ask 'do you know why we pulled you over'?
I said 'no'
They said 'you have an obscene sticker on your window. That is illegal in this state. If you do not remove it, we will have to impound your car and arrest you for breaking the obscenity laws'.
I was like that sticker? And just grabbed a corner and pulled it off the window. They then gave me a 'warning' and told me not to be putting 'obscene pictures on or about my vehicle, and that I had gotten my 'free pass this time' so next time I would be facing a much harsher penalty if they saw me doing that sort of thing again.
True story. I wondered why I took half a dozen cops to do this, and why they couldn't have just like pulled up and asked me politely to remove it instead of making it look like I was being arrested for a bank-robbery or something.
The ironic thing is that album was selling IN THE SHOPS with the same cover. It was being advertised in magazines! I didn't want to sit there and take the chance of them just arresting me anyway, which is what you DON'T want. Because of the vagueness of the laws, the arrest comes down to the discretion of the officer. If he 'feels' it's obscene, he is within his duties and right to arrest you. The judge could throw it out, but you would have no legal recourse to get back any compensation because the officer technically did not violate the law.
Thats exactly what happens every time they enforce the VaBeach laws - you go to court for saying 'poo' in public, the judge throws it out, but you can't sue them nor get your legal fees covered or anything else because the officer 'felt' it was offensive, therefore he and the state is protected under the same statue of law.
That being said there are still DOZENS of cities IN AMERICA where DANCING is ILLEGAL as is playing loud music. Don't get me started on that...

That sounds like a really odd place! Anyhow, I don't see anything in that ad that looks obscene.

You have no idea how odd Virginia is.
I remember when VB was a much cooler place. At least, I think I do. Maybe I was just friends with too many of the patrol cops down there.

I have only been to Virginia once. I remember being pretty thoroughly creeped out by the fact that the only places you can buy booze are government stores.

HAHA. When I was in Norfolk, I kinda made it a point to break the obscenity laws right in the middle of the malls. They didn't do shit to me.

Actually there's a few states with state-run liquor stores; PA and NH come to mind. MA had some pretty puritanical drinking laws; no purchasing alcohol on Sundays (back in the 80s).....
That being said, it doesn't excuse this backwards asses place one bit.

Here in Vienna such a story would NEVER occur. There are close to pornographic photos alover the place and no one seems to have a problem with it . Nice America vs Europe mentality-clash ...

Haha, well, personally, I'm not so fond of looking on men's asses, but whatever, it doesn't bother me that extremely much either, with all the naked slutty people all over television and crap like that. You can't escape it, well, well, if they removed them, that's good I guess, though I'm not sure I think they were that offensive in the first place either.
