Grief over your appearance
Hi all.
Over the last few weeks I have been going out round the pubs and clubs, wearing my usual non-work outfit of: dr.martens, leather trousers, and unmarked black t-shirt / hoodie.
For some reason on these nights out I have been getting a load of people asking me if I am gay!
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against gay men or women, indeed when I was in university a few of my friends were gay ; it’s just that I am heterosexual myself , and I have never seen or known any gay people dress the way I do.
Has anyone else here had comments like this made to them on nights out?
This has been baffling me.

Maybe it's the leather pants?
edit:
I think the real issue is why you're bothered if people ask you if you're gay.

Hey, wait a minute! I happen to be quite fond of that "look". Why would anyone call a woman dressed like that a whore?
No offense intended to the actual whores out there. ;-)

Even my closest friends have asked me at some point if I'm gay.
I take it as a compliment

Okay, now we're talking! If you dress like that and then act like you didn't want any attention, that's when I have an issue with it.
Of course, I also don't assume just because a woman dresses like that means she wants to f*ck me. But a guy can dream, can't he? Heh heh heh!

If gkb's anything like most guys from the UK, his problem with being called gay is simply that it may hinder girls from coming to sample his goods. Not to be confused with homophobia - I know plenty of straight guys who wouldn't like to be called gay, not because they find the idea necessarily offensive, but because if girls hear and mentally write them off their shag count may go down. And we all know what a catastrophe that would be, to the average male... well, the ones I know, anyway.
The solution is the same as for the girls Geisha's talking about ^ - basically, either stop dressing that way, or accept that many people will make assumptions about you based on the way you dress.

The general consensus seems to be:'People are going to judge you based on your outward appearance'.
Lose the leather pants and see how people react to you now.

Or better yet, give them to me... I split a pair after two. Fucking. Days. And they wouldn't replace them, as there were none left in my size. I got vouchers. Fucking vouchers. In fcuk. It was like God was playing some kind of horrible joke on me.

Hey gkb!
You are confused because you don't understand why these people are calling you gay when you are (just) wearing leather pants. If you cut two holes in them (one for each butt cheek to protrude from) would their opinion make more sense to you?
If you did this, perhaps everyone, including yourself, would be less confused.

wouldn't it depend on the style of leather pants tho? I mean, there are a lot of different styles of leather/pvc pants, some much more gay looking than others. are they high gloss? do they have a bunch of zippers, pockets and chains? are they tight or baggy? etc...

I agree with Existential on this one. Some leather pants depending on cut and style rate much higher on the homo-o-meter. And I don't consider all leather pants to be a signifier of someone being homosexual.
Don't cowboys wear leather pants? Didn't John Wayne wear them?

they wore chaps. not quite the same as pants. they're suppose to go OVER the jeans, or whatever other pants you're wearing. that is, SUPPOSE to. A lot of guys at leather bars just wear the chaps, with a jock strap, or tighty-whities underneath, so most all their junk can hang out.

Yes, no confusion there...
Ok, what do black leather pants, black boots, a black leather jacket, dark sunglasses, a shotgun, and a Harley Davidson make me?

I disagree that wearing Leather Pants automatically sets off the "Gay-Dar".
Leather/Latex/PVC Pants have been a staple in the Goth/Industrial scene for more than Twenty friggin years.
Manimal owns a pair and they are sexzie as fucking hell. Plus I am ordering him some new ones.
Certainly how you wear them, and what you wear them with, makes a big difference.
But to say they make any man who wears them look "Gay" is just plain wrong.
I can name heaps of STRAIGHT musicians who wear them and have for years, and they still have to beat the women off with a club.
Leather/PVC/Latex pants on a good looking man, are always drool worthy.
Regardless of sexual preference.
I find it interesting that almost everyone focused on the pants as the reason people were frequently asking if GkB was a Homosexual.
Body Language/Mannerisms go a hell of a lot farther in expressing someones sexual preference than mere clothing does in people's perceptions.
Rather than asking a bunch of people who don't know you, your body language, or your way of presenting youself to the world, try this;
" Hey Are You Gay? "
"No, I'm Not Gay, Why Do You Ask? "
That right there ^^ will go a hell of a lot farther in answering your question than this thread will for you.
My 1.7 cents.

EPS, most sheeple will look at a guy in leather pants at a bar/pub and assume he's gay.
Those are certainly not my views, but my husband has a lot of guy friends that hang out. Their first reaction to a guy wearing leather pants is "He's GAY!"
Meh.

hahaha, that's funny! That's kind of what I was thinking of. But Richard Simmons isn't gay. He said so himself! He wears very short shorts though. Short shorts on a man, that's gay too?
