"Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy"-OK, so it's missing about 80% of the weird tangents (and of the ones they kept are cut short) and the end trip to the restaraunt at the end of the universe, and added in a love story and given the vogons a bigger role than the mini-series or the radio show (confession-I've never read the books. After listening to the radio show, and seeing the mini-series, I figured there'd be no point, and from what I understand from my more Adamsoid friends, there is none). Here's what it's got-
A-big production. No, I mean BIG production. I just couldn't possibly explain exactly HOW big the production values are....now, I normally don't give a rats ass about production values, but with some films, one cheesy special effect could cause the whole house of cards to fall, and in this case, the production crew went beyond the call of duty.
B-humor. It captures a lot of Adams' wacked sense of humor quite nicely for non-initiates and Adamsoids alike (and the few additions to the storyline are fucking hilarious as hell).
C-the cast. Every performer fits the character so perfectly. Martin Freeman (from "The Office") plays Mr Dent, Sam Rockwell as Beetlebrox, Zooey Deschanel as Trillian, Alan Rickman doing the voice of Marvin, and Mos Def (aka the most beautiful man in the music industry) as the definitive Ford Prefect...now, some might be taken aback by the last statement about Mos being the definitive Ford (him being A-black, B-a hip-hop artist par excellence, and C-most definately NOT British)....trust me on this one, Mos Def is the definitive Ford Prefect.
All in all, the film does well enough on its own, and (more importantly) makes non-Adamsoids not only understand the greatness of "HHGTTG", but will make them want to check out the original mini-series and radio show (and, maybe, the books).

OH. MY. GOD. OHMYGODOHMYGOD. If what Sarah just wrote grossed you out at all, do NOT highlight this. THEY ALL SUCKED THE DILDO AFTER IT FUCKED THEIR ASSES. AND THEN KISSED. AND THEN HOCKED SERIOUS LOOGIES ON THEIR ASSHOLES. AND THEN DID IT ALL OVER AGAIN. AND AGAIN.
I'm never having sex.
Ew. Ew.
Ok, now I'm done. Just had to vent... about... that...

I loved Hitch Hiker's Guide, but they didn't put Zaphod in the torture box!
:?
I like that scene in the book, it gives you great insight into Zaphod's personality.
:P
Still it was greatly entertaining and free.
Yesterday I watched The Outsiders.
It was depressing.

Tales From The Darkside: The Movie
Yes, I still enjoy it in all it's cheezy glory. Come on, it's got Debbie Harry in it! Plus one of my favorite actors, Steve Bescimi!

So I've been on a "horrible futures" kick.
"Warriors Of The Lost World"-post-nuclear war Mad Max knock off. Not very good (even in the "so bad its good" way), but it's got Donald Pleasance (in his most annoying role ever) and Fred Williamson (being...well, Fred Williamson). It's also got a talking motorcycle (which one hopes blows up about 5 minutes after the film starts) and the ULTIMATE EXPLOIATION FILM FIGHT EVER!!!! You've got Amazon women, kung-fu fighters, fat rednecks, punk-rock thugs, and mad-max rejects all fighting each other!!!!!! Plus, a bad quasi-homo faux-S&M dance troop. Make sure your fastforward button ain't broken before watching this one.
"Warlords of the 21st Century"-So society has fallen after the "Oil Wars", and the military uses their equipment to become thugs....OK, so it's that imaginative, but it's got a big military truck that destroys everything in its path (kind of a cross between the safe car in "Damnation Alley" and the Anti-Christ mobiles in the "Thief In The Night" series"), and a motorcycle that runs on methane (from chicken shit, no less).
"America 3000"-the best of the bunch, and hilarious as all hell! Oh my god, it's got weird chewbacca things (Aargh The Awful...yep, that's its name!) and mad-max things and amazon things (women have taken over the world)....I'm still not really sure about the plot, but who cares! This one's right up there with "Penitentiary 3" as one of the greatest exploitation flicks ever!!!!!
"Prisoners Of The Lost Universe"-originally made for Showtime back in 1982, a reporter and a mechanic/martial arts champion are transported to another universe and are caught up in the local politics between humanoids and monsters of all kinds. It's got Richard Hatch (aka "Captain Appolo" of that Mormon Myth-Meets Star Wars classic, "Battlestar Gallctica"), Kay Lenz (Sandy from the classic "House"), and John Fucking Saxon!!!! It's also got a man in green paint and lots of kick-in-the-balls shots.
Oh Yeah-SIFF is happening soon. Al-you need to be up here for the American premiere of the new (and, possibly, last) Godzilla film ever! It's made by the guy who did "Versus" and "Azumi".

Well, the deal is that Tojo (the studio that owns Godzilla) wants to do any new films with a CG Godzilla, but since CG nowadays basically blows, they're guessing at least 5-10 years.....but Tojo isn't exactly on the healthy side, financially speaking, and if they go down into ashes, then so will Godzilla (after the fiasco with the American film, they ain't too keen on loaning out that specific property anymore, and selling it outright is just not even a possibility).

Some more I've watched
Memorial Day 2000-right up there with "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" as being the perfect document about the american wasteland....this time, it's about midwesterners on a camping trip. You'll laugh and cringe all at the same time! And even worse, this ain't a "mockumentary" (apparently, Carly Ptak, who's distributing it, found this tape at a West Michigan yard sale, and was so, ahem, impressed with it that it's being traded/sold/shown/whatever). Beware of drunk midwesterners listening to too much metal and hip-hop, especially when they've got their trucks and lots of lighter fluid.
"Kinsey"-People think the film's great because it deals with Mr. Kinsey, the man who accidentally kick-started the sexual revolution (whose gains are slowly being lost with the advent of the moralistic nazis known as the neo-cons). However, if you're a fan of cinema, you'll find it too simplistic, too plodding, and too generic to think of it as anything aside from "below-average".
"Me And You And Everybody We Know"-Artist-supreme Miranda July's first full-length film is an odd little film. It's a story about love, but is more about trying to connect than anything else....it's a comedy that's not soporic....it's an art film that's not too arty....it's a lot of things, but most importantly (aside from it being the opening film for SIFF), it's an amaziong film by the amazing Miranda July, who should hopefully get the attention she deserves.

Danny The Dog/Unleashed
Despite having three great actors in it(Freeman,Li & Hoskins), the movie blew goats. To me, it's not worth watching except for the fight scenes. The plot's pretty much given away completely in the commercials.
Meh!
What is wrong with people that they can actually make money off of such half-assed shit nowadays? No wonder I'm such a fan of older cinema, when people actually tried to capture an audience.

Battle Royale
Tres awesome- Lord of the Flies style. This is one of Japan's finest concepts, and best actors, too (Zatoichi, Gogo Ubari, etc. etc.).
There's just nothing awesomer than a deserted island where you put 40 school children to battle to the death, and give them each a single, completely random object that is their "weapon" (be it a pot lid or a rifle). This movie just rules. And I hear there's a sequel. I'm excited.

Actually MST3K did a hilarious send-up of that! The talking motorcycle was so annoying that when the bad-guy-mega-truck killed it, they were elated and rooting for the truck!

Well I have the car picked out...I am waiting til I can drive on my own for longer periods than I have been...it's be silly to pick up a car that you aren't really going to be ablr to drive for a week or so, but yeah I have decided on a Chrysler 300!
And I read a couple of bad reviews for that Godzilla, which broke my heart cause it was supposed to be the "ultimate" one with the monsters from all the previous instalments in. From what I hear, like most Gojira movies, it is mostly boring human interest stories, and the battles are like "hilight reels" not lasting long at all.
And they take a swipe at the recent American Godzilla as well. I dunno...I liked that version. The acting and dialog was shitty, but the CGI wasn't bad...

thanx, t. you just helped me get more excited about going to see it.
this wednesday, i'm heading to connecticut for a few drinks, some star wars and then probably a trip to the club.
all-in-all, i'm anticipating a less than perfect night - because it's not a new spider-man movie - but it'll be a damn good night nevertheless.

Mr. Stone, I haven't seen the movie yet, and you have no idea how happy you've made me. I wasn't even going to see it out of fear that I would burst into tears because they had completely ruined the series of films.

my reationary opinion is that you should see it no matter what.
i saw the original three movies when i was:
star wars = 8 y.o.
empire strikes back = 11 y.o.
return of the jedi = 14 y.o.
no matter how hard lucas works to restore the magic of the first three films, we've all aged 20 years since the last of the original three came out. there's NO WAY, as adults, we're able to experience that magic quite the same as when we were kids.
tstone summed it up wonderfully, i think. if nothing else, this movie sounds as though we will all be able to face one of our childhood "fears" and make peace with it. how many other times in life can we say we've been able to do that?
not many.
i'll be there on wednesay.

... uh... *tuggs E_E's shirtsleeve* All of us have aged 20 years? *sigh* My generation only gets remakes and rip-offs of good movies, for the most part... Oh-well

Dodgeball. Which wasn't as stupid as I thought it'd be.
Okay, it was.
But it was funny instead of just being assinine.
I defintily spelled that wrong.
