Finally got Linux
So, I finally got how to work Knoppix on my computer.
My first thought after installing it was:
"Now what?"

Heh - I have a Red Hat 5 box setup to test stuff for work. Other than ttesting stuff for work, I rarely use it because unlike windows its not very user friendly and most of the bells and whistles you use your windows box for aren't supported (or aren't EASILY supported) on Linux.
Sure, you can do many things you can normally do in Microsoft windows in Linux/x-windows, but the reality is its still a far cry from being used as everyones standard operating system.
I still view it more as a novelty than an OS.

Hey, congrats. Knoppix only annoyed me when I tested it a few years back, but - anything but Windows, right?

Ah, Linux. Now you get to preach to the masses about how the world should be running Linux and how Windows is like a prostitute that, pre-orgasm, hold up an advertisement saying "For More Cheap Sex, Visit Our Website".
I'd like to say that that was a gross exaggeration, but I copied the whole of that analogy from a friend of mine that used Linux upon a time.

Did you install Gnome or KDE as the user interface? Then all you need to do is fire up a browser and start posting on Gnet!
If you are still at command line, kudos to you, but it will require you to find an acceptable user interface rpm package to install, such as X (my fav).
X starts a very generic windows interface but allows for a lot of customization.
You can download x here:
http://www.nethack.org/v343/ports/download-linux.html
But if you just want to bring up a user friendly GUI and familiar desktop, install KDE or Gnome.

(Knoppix usually comes with X and some major desktop, Humane =) that, and a whole host of other programs - it´s a bloated distro)

Why Knoppix? Ubuntu provides a much more seamless experience.

Linux does everything I need it to do, but I don't have need of commerical software like Adobe CS.

Yup, but Jillian's question "now what?" was like he didn't have anything but a "# " prompt. If he installed a user interface, I think his question would have been "now how do I configure my gateway and DNS to find the internet?" or something like that. I was jumping to conclusions.
