Rock Band to real instruments
Those of you who play Rock Band and also play real instruments: Do you feel playing the game helps you recognize the notes when you're playing live?
I'm wondering if playing the bass parts will help tune my ears to pick out the notes easier when I'm hooked up to an amp or just listening to music.
I'm finding it's helping a little, in the vocals department. When I'm singing along to music streaming on my computer and a RB song pops up I can close my eyes and sometimes visualize the pitch guides from the TV screen =)

I think everyone should just go out and buy a guitar, and not play rockband, but that's just me. If it's working for you, then good!

Considering the guitar has 4 buttons and not 150... I don't think so.

Play rockband, fine, it's fun.
But it's nothing like playing real instruments, so shut up.

I find Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and the like frustrating because I do play real instruments. The object of those games seems far more like that of DDR or Duck Hunt than like playing in a band. Of course, DDR is hardly like actual dancing, and I imagine I'd have a very different experience really hunting ducks (except that the dog would humiliate me there too).
carakitty, don't worry. I'm excited you want to play an instrument! It's a lovely thing to add to your life. Anything that helps you pick out the bassline, the melody, chord changes, harmony is a good thing - maybe soon you'll find you've become so good at it that you can pick it up just hearing a song in the car or in a shop. But the only real way to be good at playing an instrument is practice, practice, and more practice.

And I need a printer cartridge so all these cool bass tabs I'm finding can be printed out =p
Thanks for the support.
Sometimes it's really hard for me to pick up my bass and jam because memories of my brother have a tendency to flood in. Not easy to deal with at times =(
I know the finger motions in the game aren't the same as in real playing, it's the note recognition that I need assistance with. Can't afford to go out and take lessons but my brother never did and he kicked ass so maybe I can pull it off too.

I don't know what happened to your brother, but it's obviously sad and painful for you. I'm so sorry. I'm sure that sometimes playing makes you feel connected to him, and other times it is just too hard. I went seven years without playing the piano, because every time I sat at it I was overwhelmed with grief over the death of the woman who taught me to play. I'd tear up until I couldn't even read the notes. The piano still looks a little like a shrine to her thirteen years later, but at least now I think of her and feel grateful for the gift she gave me - not just piano and the instruments I took up later, but music as expression, emotion, salvation.
Forgive the tangent - I hope playing brings you peace, carakitty.

Thank you, Ophelia.
My brother died of Leukemia July 2008. He was more than a brother to me, he felt more like my soul mate.
I'm sorry for the loss of your piano teacher.
Music is salvation indeed. *hugs* and peace-bringing playing to you too.
