Keeping that purple, well, purple.
Oi oi, just a very quick question for the Gnet 'think tank' (crushing the hordes of ignorance 'neath it's tracked fury) regarding dying hair.
Probably been answered plenty of times before, so I apologise in advance for the question I am about to ask.
I wish to dye my hair purple. As this has always proved fun in the past.
Are there any products you can recommend?
Is there anything I should do when initially dying my hair? Like bleach it?
How can I keep the colour..well..in?
Does bombing ones hair with purple chemical have negitive effects after a while?
I throw myself upon your collective wisdom and mercy and request, if not beg, that someone hold my hand and gently lead down the path to hair-dye based adventure land, before giving me a tender kiss on the forehead and sending me on my merry way.
Hurrah.

Why not just bleach the shit out of your hair and then bombard it with thick purple kool-aid? Or just dye your hair purple and keep it up with kool-aid.

I dyed my hair purple once, it faded quickly and left me with reddish-brown hair

Simple question, simple answers... >_>
Right, bleach it I shall, I feel I should also only wash my hair with conditioner on alternate days.
We have a plan.
Over and out.

Just don't wash it with shampoo very often. Even if it sounds like it's not hygenic, it'll prevent the dye from washing out quicklier.

For unnatural colours like purple Manic Panic seems to last the longest - it also does next to no damage.
Bleach the hell out of your hair first, and DO NOT use conditioner before adding the purple colour. You want the hair to remain porous.
Don't wash it often, and when you do use a shampoo specifically designed for unnaturally coloured hair (I use a bright red one for my red sections).
Have fun.

Actually Punky Colour lasts the longest, however Manic Panic has a nice bright purple look instead of the dark purple like Punky Colour that in dark light can appear almost black.

I love purple hair but it stains like buggery and the last time I did it a weeks worth of living outdoors at a festivel made it fade to silver and pink despite being freshly dyed the day before I left....it seems you get better dyes in the US...

Obviously unless you're naturally white blond you want to use 40 volume bleach. Get it at a beauty supply store rather than the drug store, it will be cheaper and they will recommend you a good brand.
As for dye - in my experience, Special Effects lasts 2-3 times longer than punky color or manic panic. They have a great selection of colors at amphigory.com. I used Deep Purple for years, it lasts forever but stains everything it touches! However, the amount of pigment your hair absorbs depends on your hairs health and texture, so different dyes will fade differently on different people. You can also leave Special Effects on as long as you want, I recommend 1-2 hours. It will cause the color to "bleed" for longer, but your hair will also absorb more dye.
As for maintaining the color - I recommend a color preserving shampoo and conditioner, and washing your hair every other day. If you have to wash your hair daily, just rub some shampoo onto your roots where it is the most greasy rather than shampooing down to the ends (which generally stay cleaner longer).

Ah! That's wonderful! It was going to be either Manic Panic or Special Effects.
I don't suppose anyone could recommend any good websites to buy such things in the UK could they?
I found somewhere called BeeUnique (and it has a bee on it! ><) so I'll use that if no-one suggests anything.
A thousand thankyous from the very bottom of black heart to you all for posting! (*insert cute emote here*)

Dont forget to smear your hairline, neck, ears and the spot where you part your hair (if you do) with Vaseline. It'll save you from unintentionally dying most of your face purple and looking like a fool for days until you manage to scrub it off.

The bottom half of my hair is bright red and it’s prone to fade really quickly as well. What I do is wash the top half frequently which is jet black naturally and wash the bottom half not so frequently. My colour is still very strong and I avoid using the hairdryer and hair straightner. If I do I make sure I apply a heat protection spray which I use any way’s on the un-dyed parts because my hair’s easily damaged.
I needed to have the bottom half bleached because my hair was so dark but you don’t have to unless you want the colour to be really strong. If you have blond hair you can probably get away without having it bleached. I also don’t recommend bleaching your hair if it’s damaged, it will completely kill it. Make sure you keep your hair well conditioned before and after the dying, it will keep your hair healthy and your hair will look sleeker.

I’m not sure which hair dye you should use but I’m always hearing about Manic Panic which I believe specialises in crazy hair colours.

I hear that putting white vinegar in your hair before you dye it whatever color, will raise the Ph level in it, making it last longer ^-^; I hope I'm not lying. Read the manic panic site, good dyein tips. I love manic panic, i used it for 2 years, its just annoying when it fades. Doesnt kill your hair or anything.

I dyed my hair blue with Manic Panic which I ordered from rockstarretail.com a few weeks ago... It's starting to fade a lot now, so I'll probably refresh it soon. I bleached it first, and if my info is correct, you have to to get the color correct.

I just remembered something I used to do with my M.Panic! I figured I would tell someone, incase you get bored with your color. If you have more than one shade of one color, or are just in the mood to mix the various of colors you have -> Go for it! The colors give interesting results.
I wasnt sure at first if it would work, so i test sploched it, and the colors I used turned out really nicely. (They also gave me shades my friends didn't have, so I wasn't their "twin" blue-haired girl anymore.)
Dont be scared, its just hair ;3
