You choose to dress the way you do, just like they choose to think the way they think. If you really want to dress the way you do you just have to deal with that.

Indeed, I couldn't handle being normal.
Really, you dress "weird" and you take the comments. You may even be physically assaulted, you need to deal with it =)

There will always be a certain segment of the population that THRIVES on bringing you down.
They are called COWARDS, and if the can get everyone to notice YOU, no one will be looking at how pathetic they are.
Fuck them. They are losers who get off on making other people miserable. What "normal" person would WANT to be a part of that so-called "normal" shit anyway? Being a freak isn't all bad.
Next time your mother freaks out about you being a "satanist", look her in the eye, and say "I am just going through a phase. The bigger deal you make of it, the more I will seek negative attention. I do not worship Satan, but I like to annoy you, because that is what teenagers do. Maybe you should just ignore it, and I will eventually grow up." That should shut her up, for a while.
You may choose to be goth forever, but your mom's opinion will matter less when you are no longer under her roof.

I wish I could understand what this freak is trying to say. I mean, it's not even Halloween yet, and I think she's satanic.

I'm rather tired of people saying that people who look down upon those who dress in a manner other than the social norm are evil people.

Listen, learn some cultural Anthropology. People have a certain way they expect things to be, and it's usually based on the culture they grew in and live in. When they see someone completely opposite from what they're raised to know, it challenges them. It challenges their very grasp on the nature of whatever social group the person is from. It's a culture shock, and it messes with people. In their culture, in their world view, you ARE a freak, you're different from what they know to be normal.
If they learn to accept it, or approach it with curiosity, or anything other than blind hatred, they're good people. If they approach it with hatred, you MUST combat it with kindness, not malice. You have to understand, to the common man, you represent all who look like you in their minds. If you act like a cretin, they will assume all in your culture are cretins. I don't like this fact any more than you do, but it is true in many cases. Mind you, I didn't say all, just many.

My advice to you is to dress how you want, and try to show people you're NOT a depraved monster, show them that you're a good person, and you may change how they see a small portion of the world.

Good explanation. I'll remember that at work the next time I get 'shredded' by my lovely coworkers.

You change what is inside of you to have an impact on yourself. You change what is outside of you to have an impact on others. Your insistence in dressing outside of social norms is designed to get the attention of others (like your post here). You cannot request that attention and then expect it to only take a form that pleases you. However, most people I know who dress in a flamboyant or extravagant manner have a closed rationalization loop in place that validates their feelings and desires even when they get negative feedback.

When I was the manager of various businesses, I would routinely discriminate against people who had an over abundance of displayed tattoos or piercings in my hiring practices, just as I would discriminate against people who would show up for interviews wearing a wife-beater or a latex catsuit.

Many would say it was unfair. I was not interested in being fair. I was interested in finding the optimum candidate who would sell my products to customers and build the business. People who show up in public venues and insist that people should accept them the way they choose to appear are in denial of reality and expecting the world to change to meet their needs. NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN.

So, this needy call for attention DOES make you a maladjusted soul that an unkind person could rightly describe as freakish.

"Your insistence in dressing outside of social norms is designed to get the attention of others (like your post here)"

Why do you assume that people are dressing for the attention of others (by which I assume you meanpeople outside the wearer's social group)?

It's like when 14-year-olds who wear tank-tops or whatever have to put up with wolf-whistles from crusty old pervs who assume that their clothing suggests the kids are placing themselves in the sexual cattlemarket, when all they are doing is enjoying some dressing-up with their friends, on their way to a teen disco.

if you are dressing for yourself or with your friends, then simply ignore others who have a problem with that. From a very young age, people, from the time they are children, will decide to pick on those who are different , so long as they have others to back them up. It is part of subsuming themselves into a tribe.
Others prefer to be individuals.
