Personally, I don't think bass ever sounds good on distortion. In death metal, it's rarely anything more than barely audible background distortion. Worse yet, it takes away from the low end sound.

It could sound good with a pinch of distortion, you'd have to have the right settings, though.

Dude, I agree!
Uhm, I've been playing the guitar for over a year now. My equipments; a white Yamaha RGX A2 and a Line 6 Spider III Amplifier. The sound they make is really unique and distinct. Heheh, I usually play classic rock (such bands like Rush, Journey, Led Zeppelin, Queen), and Post-Punk (such as Sisters of Mercy and Joy Divsion)

I just got my hands on a sweet ESP MH-401 FM, oh god, the action is sweet, the neck is fast (and set,) and those pickups can attack like a rabid dog!

A good example of those settings is the intro to Hysteria, by Muse. I've been playing bass for a little while now, and I'm going to get a new one sometime or another. Currently, I'm looking at the Ibanez SR300, but suggestions are more than welcome. As for price, I'm looking for something about $400 tops.

I have a BC rich warbeast. It doesn't sound that good and I payed a lot of money for it.

My first guitar was a BC Rich Warlock, if it's got the original stock BDSM pick-ups, then you're tone is gonna be really muffled and undefined. I took mine and put a really low string gauge on it and I only use it for rhythm in drop B tuning.

I have a Gibson SG, an Epiphone SG, and an Ibanez Les Paul looking ART-100 which I've pimped out with Seymour Duncan pickups, new tuners, etc. I'm getting a Gibson Les Paul today or tomorrow because I just got paid. Weee!

Duane,
The best thing to do Duane in my experience is to go to your local music store and try out a Les Paul or SG and see which is most suitable for you, but the main factor will be your budget.
The most affordable Les Paul by Gibson is the `Les Paul Studio` which costs less than the Les Paul Standard, or the much more expensive Les Paul Customs.

It is also important when looking at a particular instrument that interests you to read up and research as much as you can about them, and try as many different Les Pauls or SG`s as you can to find the right instrument for you !!!.

Well, I don't like the idea of buying anything to expensive if I can't play too well. Work leaves little time to improve, as does sleep... my budget then, would be 350. Oh... what's the one that the guys of Thin Lizzy played? Same question for the guys of Def Leppard.

Have you thought of `hire purchasing` an instrument, its the best way to do it, or ask if you can pay in installments ?
Def Leppard have used many different guitars including Les Pauls, Jacksons (soloist, Dinky), Ibanez Destroyer (Phill Collen model with 3 pick ups) !!!.
Have you considered Ibanez or Dean guitars, both companies make excellent instruments and are great value for money ?
Dean Guitars (if you love Les Paul inspired designs then check out the `Soltero` series, and the all time classic the `Cadillac` series
