Walk-ability Of American Cities

I found this interesting article here:

http://tinyurl.com/683szj

It's about a website run by a group that rates how 'walkable' an area is based on whats near it.

Scores greater than 70 indicate neighborhoods where it's possible to get by without owning a car, while scores greater than 90 qualify communities as a "Walker's Paradise."

You can type in any address in America and it uses Google Maps to calculate whats near it and uses their system to rate how 'walkable' your address is.

Pretty cool. Also dead handy for when yer moving to see if the place your moving to is walkable enough to get by without a car.

The address I used to live at in America had a score of 29. That really sucks. Another address I lived in had a 63, close to walkable, however, it was surrounded by inner-city crime ridden areas so ye prolly wouldn't be walking even if the shop was right down the block there.

Still, excellent idea and something thats bound to catch on in the states with the price of gas being so high.

The place that I'm in now has a score of 69 but that score is actually a little low as I'm in a newly built city center and there are new things opening up ever few weeks (for one we now have a grocer that is not on the site but is about .01 miles away). So where I'm at is pretty walkable for everything except for going to campus, although there are bike paths to campus so a car isn't necessary.

Hmm my location of residence scored a 6, though the results could use a tiny bit of updating I doubt it will make that much of a difference. Can anybody else get a lower score than mine?

Scored an 80:

Used to be able to even walk to The Showcase Theatre on cool days but it closed down at the end of last April. Now one must drive a long ways to the nearest scene.

my old home back in florida got a 6.
You can only imagine how weird it is to go from living in a '6' to a '43'.

My home scores a 0, then again the driveway alone is half a mile long so I'm not surprised. It is really odd going from having nothing around you to having just about everything that you need right at your doorstep.

I scored an 80. I don't see how though.

Yes, it's walkable in a straight line. However, I find it very hard to do a straight line through hills, forests, and rivers.

It worked for my home address (UK) too.

And it manages to see a lot of shops. Except the supermarket thats like a five minute walk from my house...

So 55.

Plus it doesn't really include shops in a nearby town, which gets a 75. I walk there regularly.
