I'm mostly Irish. I have tiny bits German, Dutch Scottish, English, and Native American, but I don't identify with anything but Irish.

So many nations. Does he identify with all of them? Does he identify with any of them?
For most people, unless their from or really into one of the countries, it doesn't really mean jack. I identify with the Italian. Somewhat because my last name has more vowels in it than consonants, but mostly because that's the heritage I grew up with. Food had Italian flavourings to it, even if it wasn't what you'd think of as typical Italian food. Our BBQ was smoked with fresh herbs instead of wood chips, crap like that. Wine was part of dinner, even for the children (Only one small glass for the yougins, mind you). Don't get me started on holiday meals, they seemed to start at 10am and end around 10pm.

But, like I said, I'm only 3rd generation in the US. So a lot of that was still around. Since my grandparents have died it isn't that way any more and I kind of feel sorry for my nieces and nephews because, like most Americans, where their family is from will be just another name on a map.

As for being proud of being Italian, or being proud of any heritage for that matter (especially if you didn't grow up in it), I don't understand it. Being Italian, German, or Irish doesn't make you who you are. It sure as hell doesn't make you anything special. Big deal, I'm Italian, I've got the oiliest hair on the entire block and a last name that most people have a hard time pronouncing, even after I've corrected them multiple times. Go me.

So you have Coconut oil in your hair to have the Oiliest hair on the block?

You sound like one of 'em Indians.

I'm Irish, through and through, and very proud to be so. I can't claim to have ancestors that lived in other interesting places. As far as I know, the generations before me were Irish too.

I know what you mean. I feel like a mutt, really. I identify the most with my Native American roots (my great-grandmother being full-blood) but also have a fascination with Serbia, it being my grandfather's homeland.

Scotch-Irish, German, French, and a little Dutch I think. [Basically, a common U. S. Southerner, as far as genetics go.]

I know my bloodline history because we had to do a paper on it in high school, and it turns out most of my great grandparents were immigrants from England and Ireland, with the exception of my paternal grandmother's parents who were Francophone Canadians, and I couldn't find anything about that part of the family past that.

In terms of cultural heritage, I don't know where I stand. My mom is Newfie but my dad is from Ontario, I was raised here most of my life but I was pretty resistant to Newfie culture, now that I'm in the city I've warmed up to it and I don't think we're hopeless anymore, but out in a small community I only got to see the hick version of it, and assumed thats all there was to it.

I could've said just "European." But that term encompasses so many different cultural backgrounds that leaving it simply as that doesn't do it justice. And neither does saying just Mexican.

Not true. There are regionalisms but there is a clear cultural heritage most of us Mexicans feel we belong. Even as an atheist I consider the Catholic church a part of my heritage. Even separatist groups like the Zapatistas keep saying they are Mexicans and will always be Mexican.
I used you as example. There's little chance you can identify with being Austrian, Russian, and Portuguese at the same time. Don't get offended and start implying you know more about my country than myself.

Same here, I don't understand it.

Half English, half American, I have no idea any further back than that. Not at all Australian despite what a few people seem to have thought.

Mostly Irish with some English and German thrown in and while I am interested in all three cultures the only one I really identify with is the Irish, though I do have an extensive collection of German recipes that I deeply enjoy making.

If Its a question of identifying through the stomach, it's certainly French. Buche de Noel for the win.

One of the best ways to experience a culture is through their food, real, honest, traditional food somehow does contain the essence of a culture
