Yeah, that was brutal. So was the South Park where Kenny died for real, although not as much as the dog. Man, that dog hurt my heart.

I fucking love dogs.

Not really. I blew a dog's jaw off with a breach gun, once. I saw it coming for me, and the only thing I could think about was that fucking suck-ass rabies shot.

Did you get a hard-on thinking about its puppies at home crying for their mama? If so then I guess that almost, sorta counts as loving dogs.

Those dogs were fucking gross. I really do love dogs, but living in sewage makes me lose compassion for stuff.

I'm taking that as a yes, since you didn't deny the hard-on. You sick puppy.

Excuse me for a moment while I give myself an incidental pun high-five.

I have the Complete Works, and it's good reading. Like someone else said, "The Cask of Amontillado is just badass. I also find "Some Words With a Mummy" hilarious.

And Anabel Lee never fails to bring this strange moisture to my eyes.

I'm a big fan of Anabel Lee as well. The Sleeper and The Conqueror Worm are other favs of mine. Wouldn't call Poe one of my favorite authors anymore though. He's been demoted to merely brilliant.

In fact the point you make to them is stupid, anyway, it completely disregards their circumstances. It's almost like you're assuming that Poe should be readily appearing in everybody's literary periphery when they're 13 and that anyone who comes across him later, enjoys his work and perhaps even flaunts it is somehow behind the eight-ball and thus comic relief for those of you who read him earlier.
No, a society of Precocious Poe Peers does not exist and even if one did I wouldn't wanna front it. Looking back at the post it was a real snob thing to say but in all honesty I don't feel any better or even different from someone discovering their love for Poe. Good for them.

not into poe at all

Poe does nothing for me. I found nothing frightening or disturbing and really didn't see what all the fuss was about. I found HP Lovecraft to be far more effective as a horror writer and capable of creating absolute paranoia and xenophobia which appealed more.

I generally prefer a more SF Horror theme.

Mind you I don't list him as a favorite. He is quite quite good.

A hipster, I don't like it 'cause everyone else does, thing to say. Especially considering he wasn't mainly a horror writer. He entertained, honestly. And played with various forms of writing.

Although for me and most people here, we kinda get all of his body of works drilled into our heads in school because he grew up here in Richmond.

(Fun fact: The house he grew up in, and eventually moved back to, is currently a Strip Club once called "The Velvet" now called "Rouge", with an Edgar Allan Poe museum across the street because the guy who owned the place wouldn't sell it; so they've never been able to get the original building)

Because Lovecraft isn't popular, either.

I like both Poe, because i grew up with Poe. At some young age, I can't remember, I sat in a class room thinking to myself, why are we reading such stupid crap, these book things suck, and then I read The Black Cat. Instantly i fell in love with the stories of Poe and desired much more. I found much better authors, but Poe was my gateway to the literary world.

Hipster? Hardly. I stated my opinion and had nothing negative to say about him. Simply a preference. My preference.

Probably because he was a successful and talented author that's widely known.

Why is everyone defending their taste of Poe?
You motherfuckers are not defending Poe; you're defending your liking of him.
This thread is not about how much Poe sucks; it's about the fucking annoying trend of newbies saying that they absolute favorite author is Poe - something anyone who actually liked literature wouldn't say.

You guys defending your liking of Poe just shows that you took offense from this thread and are trying to rationalize it.

Yo, Jilly. Sometimes, in a rare moment of lucidity, you see into my mind. When these rare but cherished moments arrive, we are one. You COMPLETE me.

Let's get drunk, take lots of drugs, and hump like bonobos. It will be epic. Have my politically-confused crack babies.

I remember being a teen. Poe has great tone and the poems are slightly morbid, yet fun to recite. It took awhile before branching out and finding other authors. Before Poe, my favorite author was C. S. Lewis. Now there are tons of authors I've enjoyed reading or want to read.

Let's see: Mary Oliver, John Keats and so-on. I also like Isacc Asimov. He wrote "Nemisis." Usually writing textbooks his fiction is wonderful.
