What is and Isn't Metal

Just for the record, the following bands ARE metal:

Iron Maiden (The staple of every Metalheads musical diet.)
Metallica
Megadeth
Slayer (It's also good for harassing hippies)
Black Sabbath
Blue Oyster Cult
Judas Priest
Pantera

The following bands ARE NOT metal:

Korn
Bullet for my Valentine
System of a Down
Limp Bizkit (Sadly I have heard them be refered to as metal before...)
Slipknot
Papa Roach (Sadly them too)
Hatebreed
Linkin Park (and even them...)

Feel free to add to the list as long as you know what you're talking about.

Aren't those bands nu metal?
Not trying to detract from the implication that they suck.

Well, I think this depends on where you draw the line in the sand. Yeah, Nu-metal sucks. But it does share a number of instrumental similarities to other types of metal. I guess it really depends on where one draws the line in the sand. You can call an SUV a car, or you could say that's stupid and call it a truck.

Nu Metal is sort of a grey area, by your logic it could also be considered rap, Hip-hop, or even alternative rock.

Anyway, I started this thread because all of those crappy bands I listed have been called Heavy Metal by people my age before who claim to be Metalheads.

I swear, one of my major pet peeves is people saying they like Metal, and then Name dropping bands Like Slipknot, Korn, and Bullet for my Vallentine.

Well, no. Nu Metal is musically much, much closer to metal than to Hip-Hop or Rap. Alternative rock is closer than Rap or Hip-Hop, but still there's a reason its nu metal. Now, culturally speaking there is a very large gap between nu metal and metal proper, I don't consider a nu metal fan a metalhead per se, but there's also a lot of variation under the auspices of metal. Blue Oyster Cult and Metallica are quite different in their musical style and themes, but both are clearly metal. I don't think its totally correct to ignore than metal and nu metal have so much similarity in their musical style. But yes, Nu Metal fans who call themselves metalheads are only marginally better than Nu Metal fans who call themselves goth.

I really don't See nu metal as a type of Metal at all, other than in name. Admittedly it is metal based.

All the bands I listed have common themes, While Nu Metal Is a perversion of any messages sent by real metal bands. It's designed to be cheap entertainment targeted at kids who will jump on any bandwagon to be "cool."

And Marginally better? trust me, they're just as bad. I want to say worse, but I know thats not the case.

Allow me to close my arguement by posting the lovely, Intelligently worded lyrics to the slipknot song "get this"

I don't like a fuckin' thing! Music sucks dick
Suck the snot end of the tip of my prick
You fucking cunts, get off of my back
I don't wanna do a show with your shitty
fuckin' band - You suck, they suck, guess what, get fucked
I can't think of any other words to say but fuck
Don't drag our opinions, our opinions are great
It's new school face muthafuckers I hate

[SO:] Local bands (suck these nuts)
U.S. bands (suck these nuts)
Worldwide bands (suck these nuts)
All you bands can suck these fuckin' nuts!
Go!

Don't berate me - Cuz you can't stop me
From breakin' your face - It's you I'll erase
It's Hate - Muthafucker - Hate - Muthafucker - Hate

[SO:] Local bands (suck these nuts)
U.S. bands (suck these nuts)
Worldwide bands (suck these nuts)
All you bands can suck these fuckin' nuts!
Go!

Life's so shitty, but ain't it fuckin' great?

Get this or die!

[SO:] Local bands (suck these nuts)
U.S. bands (suck these nuts)
Worldwide bands (suck these nuts)
All you bands can suck these fuckin' nuts!
Go!

Just looked up "Get This" on YouTube. Found a live performance where the singer announces it as "old school shit". This annoys me to no end.

I grant you all with good Music

Megadeth- A tout le Monde:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEK6PpkF7hk

Even If your not a fan of Metal, This song Will Mindfuck you. It has a high Gothic appeal IMHO.

Metallica- Enter Sandman:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcpBezJPcTk

Excellent song, Has some some creepy moments, Major milestone for Metallica.

Iron Maiden- Run to the Hills:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZlDZPYzfm4

Really catchy tune, It's about how the white people took over the Naitive American's land.

Black Sabbath- Snowblind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MoRaSkGVKs

Finally we'll wind down, with something a bit slower, but no less Epic. I love the subtle cocain addiction references.

I've just discovered Opeth after being given a free ticket to see them in Bristol last weekend. They were great - would you consider them metal? I think I would... there was a real cross-section of people in the audience - goth, metallers (what we called jitters back in the 70s/80s - showing my age here!), 'normal' people, even young children. It was nice!

I think the only metal I´ve ever been able to really like is Metallica, Cathedral, Ulver, Bathory and Ancient Ceremony. For some reason, doom metal makes me feel happy. Yeah, I know that sounds weird.
