Miscarriage potentially a Homicide case

... well, if Utah lawmakers get their way.

Lawmakers in Utah are attempting to introduce a law to charge with homicide women who obtain illegal abortions. While the premise itself is bad enough, punishing poorer women who seek illegal abortions because they cannot afford to go out of state for abortions, the wording is so magnificently vague that it targets any "intentional, knowing, or reckless act" leading to termination of pregnancy.

A few examples that could be tried as murder under the technical wording of the law-
-women who miscarry as a result of not escaping from domestic violence
-women who can't afford the time off work and miscarry as a result of a high-stress, high-activity job
-women who live on farms and spend time around easily spooked animals
-women who are beaten up, but whose attacker claims to have been paid to beat her till she miscarries. (and that one's based on an existing case)

More from the Salt Lake Tribune.

Yeah I saw this a few days ago. It makes me utterly depressed.

Has anyone heard if the governor is going to sign the bill?

Just wanted to bump this up above the infowars spam.

Salon has a good article about it:

http://www.salon.com/news/abortion/i..._abortion_bill

My favourite part being the conclusion:

Quote:
Speaking to RH Reality Check this week, National Advocates for Pregnant Women's Lynn M. Paltrow, summed it up: "For all these years the anti-choice movement has said, 'We want to outlaw abortion, not put women in jail. But what this law says is 'no, we really want to put women in jail.'"
This is huge, guys. I'm sure this could be overturned in court, but in the meantime women can get sent to jail because they miscarried. This could mean that less women will try to keep their pregnancies secret by not seeking prenatal care, and don't think that they will not jail women. It happened in Iowa last month after the mother fell down a flight of stairs and she confided her in her doctor that she sometimes had second doubts about the pregnancy:

The charges were dropped after she spent two days in jail.

And finally, Amplify has an article on why you should be vocal about this in any way you can:

This is absolutely ridiculous, and really very sad. I hope this bill does not get signed...

Sadly, it looks like it will be signed, and even if he doesn't sign it his veto can be over-ridden.

Well, it's no surprise that Utah is not the state to live in if you want progressive government. However, this strikes me as a new low. Terribly backwards thinking on the part of legislators there. Probably unconstitutional too, but some woman is going to have to go through hell to get her case run up to a higher court that will rule it so. This is very sad.

Reminds me of the places in the middle east where they punish the women for getting r@ped, and by the looks of it it's exactly that and more.
