It's a lot more reliable than people give it credit for. And I just checked dictionary.com, and the definitions of a fetish range from "any object or nongenital part of the body that causes a habitual erotic response or fixation", to "Something, such as a material object or a nonsexual part of the body, that arouses sexual desire and may become necessary for sexual gratification", as well as what your definition appears to be: "a form of sexual desire in which gratification depends to an abnormal degree on some object or item of clothing or part of the body".
So you're right, but others in this thread haven't been 100% wrong. English definitions aren't often solid and consistent.

Ophelia would you accept something as a fetish if it is not necessarily required for orgasm but achieving orgasm is difficult with out the presence of that something? That is just the definition that I am used to as that is what we used in my human sexuality class.
Personally I don't have any fetishes, I like a lot of bondage, especially using silk scarves, but going vanilla works just fine for me as well.

No, wikipedia is not the be-all-end-all of anything, but it can serve as a reference, especially since many articles do have sources cited now. I also don't have the time or the patience to go down to my local library to get some books to post definitions from for the sake of a semantic argument on an online forum.
Not to mention other sites do back up the definition I mentioned as one of several accepted definitions. Just as Cicero said, many words in the English language have several different connotations, and I don't see the point in getting so worked up over some people having a different interpretation of the word than you intended, which was why I responded in the first place.

Experience isn't necessary with the fetish in particular, I'd think, given some fetishes (such as tentacle ****, inflation, castration, *****, etc.) can only be experienced once, if at all. Since it's desire-based, what turns someone on, I don't think it would be necessary to experience sex at all to have a fetish, so long as sexual desire is present.
