The ring of fire has been extremely active since January. I laughed when the Haiti earthquake was followed by significant quakes in China and Chile, and scientists said it was just a coincidence. Since then we've had significant quakes (magnitude 4.0 or higher) in Turkey, Chile (again!) and Baja Mexicali. Coincidence my ass!

Chart showing Significant Earthquakes of 4.0 magnitude or higher in 2010

11 events listed since January 1, 2010.

Haiti isn't in the Ring of Fire, and magnitude 4.0+ is common.

I'm glad I'm not alone in noticing these. I'm expecting it to get worse and I have the unfortunate coincidence to live on a fault line. As in, directly on one.

New Zealanders were stupid enough to build their second biggest city on a massive fault-line and the biggest city over fifty supposedly extinct mountains.

Actually, all the 11 events listed at the link I posted above were 5.2 and above, and most were 6.5 or more. Your point on Haiti not being in the ring of fire is noted. I should have just said that tectonic plate activity has been higher since January.

True but they all still fall below the yearly average for their respective magnitude class if you multiply up from three/four months to a year. Except for the 8.0 - 8.9 range, which averages a single event a year.

If it seems that earthquake activity is higher it's probably more likely that rather than the number of events increasing, earthquakes are striking populated areas more frequently this year. Hopefully any further high magnitude earthquakes will strike unoccupied areas.
