Gothic Fashion, waist coats, and DIY crapz.

So basically, I love the fashion of the site www.dracinabox.com They are not exactly that expensive for what you get, but I would not order anything unless I was ordering a large amount, because of the shipping.

My favorite outfit on the site is the one worn by this fellow http://www.dracinabox.com/more/on/details/05002

But of course, I have a few questions. What exactly is a waist coat? I can't exactly tell from that image; I'm unsure if it has sleeves or not. And, would they be that complicated to make? If not, then does anybody know how?

As obvious as it sounds...its my only suggestion.

Wikipedia waist coat, everything you'd want to know about them ^^

Except how to make them of course...

On the note of dracinabox...loving this site...

Well then... it's a vest.. don't I feel stupid...

To be honest with you, I've wiki'd it before, but it didn't say that. That gives me an idea.. I've got a vest that I never wear because it's kind of big.. I could alter it and make it look better..

That would be the easiest option...

Lol...don't feel bad Rorschach...I realized it was a vest about twenty seconds after I posted that comment and was like *smacks head*...

Hmm...what color is the vest in question and does it have any sort of trim or general decor on it?

it's somewhat of a dark grey, almost black color. It has very subtle white and red stripes on it. I could probably get away with not altering it, but it's not going to kill me if I do. I got it for 2$ from a thrift store. maybe I should put some zippers on it... eh.. probably not a good idea.

Thrift stores are pure love.

What about just changing the buttons on it? I had a black velvet blazer that I was getting a bit bored with and I decided to swap the basic black buttons for some silver ones. *shrugs* its simple but it could make a difference.

I have a couple of Waist Coats, they were all the rage before the 1930s, and still used with Tux's and on some suits.

Reasons to own them?

They are effin' awesome.

They are stylish.

They are freakin' awesome.

Modding is very, very easy. I got one on sale at a department as part of a tux. I just bought it, nice satin material and very high quality.

It had a strap in the back, which I removed (still need to tailor it to fit just me). I may go back and get another one and change the buttons to pewter for more of statment. I like the black satin ones when I want to be more muted...

I'll post a picture, when I get around to doing it. I've got to get some silver buttons now.

I agree, Depths, they are awesome. I have a grey one that I wear with brown and blue stuff. It's very awesome.

I can never seem to find them... I like to dabble in the androgynous look and it suits me rather well... However I am oh so blessed to live in a town mostly populated by the elderly so all of the waistcoats/vests have things like holiday motifs or bright flowered designs...

*shudders*

Not ordered from them, but reenactors I know say it's a good site, and that Wahmaker is very, very decent quality. Bit pricy though...

A great thing about waistcoats as well, is if ou have to play the corporate game, you can keep a hint of Goth to you, while still looking like Wall Street. I'm working for my MBA, so this is a big point for me.

I think the good people of the Gentleman's Emporium, a cracking good site though it is, don't ship outside of the US at the moment, which is a little bit naff.
Personally, I've always used the Dark Angel (http://www.thedarkangel.co.uk/onlinestore.php) for this sort of thing. It's a UK company that might be a little pricey but you are paying for very good quality items. And also they deliver pretty quicksharp!

Thanks be to both of you, I've never seen either of those websites.

When you get down to it, those websites aren't very expensive, for what you get. Most quality vests are upwards of $200.

Inspired by this thread, I went shopping today. Didn't buy anything, but at Men's Warehouse's Formal Wear shop, they had a very, very impresive selection at comparable rates to Gentlemen's Emporium.

I saw two red ones that I may just have to go back and get. Both were very sleak.

I had to explain what I was looking for and why, though. It was in the 'Ritz-y' part of town, and I'm not sure they have that many Goths looking for clothes. =P

No, see.... what you do is, add some straps like the kind that backpacks have on the sides of your waist coat. Put like... two on each side, connecting from the front to the back. THEN, get some eyelets down the spine and lace it up with black ribbon.
