I just came up with the nerd joke from hell.

"They say that the subjunctive mood is dead in English. Well fuck that!"

Oh well. Nobody got the joke.

What was supposed to be funny was that "fuck that!" is in the subjunctive.

So, like... the "fuck that" is rejecting the claim that the subjunctive mood is dead, and at the same time it is itself a counterexample proving that the subjunctive is alive and well.

Idea being that people would read that, and then they would think it was funny. And then they would laugh, or something. And that would be good.

Okay, I'm done now.

Wouldn't it be funnier if the retort wasn't in the subjunctive, thus contradicting the point of the sentence? Or am I just devoid of normal humour?

That was a good joke. I think I'll use it, but my cretin peers probably won't get it. :-P

If the retort wasn't in the subjunctive it would be agreeing with the point of the sentence, not contradicting it. You aren't devoid of humour... just of grammatical precision.

I got the joke, Drake. It reminds me of 'I didn't fucking use a split infinitive!'

LMFAO!

Then it is truly the best joke in the world. Humour for the masses... everyone from the bourgeoisie to the lumpenproletariat.

Marx would be so proud.

(NB: This post doesn't mean to imply that HP is part of the bourgeoisie. I would move from the idealistic Germany of Marx and Engel to 19th Century France and visit Henri Murger for HP.. for I think that he is easily more bohemian than bourgeiosie.)

What I didn't get was the 'subjunctive mood is dead in English'.
What's wrong with subjunctives in modern English?

It seems not to be often used in modern American-English as they tend to use indicitives in their place. We still use a lot of subjunctive mood in our speech in Australia.

I finally worked out where I had seen the start of Drake's joke before...

"The subjunctive mood is in its death throes, and the best thing to do is to put it out of its misery as soon as possible."
~W. Somerset Maugham.

Apparently Maugham is the 'they' people keep referring to.

Of course! Now I remember the quote from The Magician in which Haddo is warned to wait an hour after eating before he goes for a swim!

That's what I originally thought...Then again, the joke would lose its sense of irony.

LOL. I'm going to call my roommates oafs now. lol. "Oafs." Ha...

The really funny thing is that my parents would find it completely unfunny for the same reason....

Okay, so some people did get it! I feel better.

There's a good bit on Wikipedia about the alleged demise of the subjunctive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subjunc...subjunctive.3F

I think it would be a terrible shame if the subjunctive died. It's fun to have around.

Long live the subjunctive! :P

Excellent! Do you mind if I tell that to my fellow grammar nerds? I don't want to steal anyone's intellectual property.

Just tell them that you got it from a guy who rejects the very idea of intellectual property, and you figure he's not in much of a position to complain.
