I'm sooo gawf!
I love Marilyn Manson. I only eat Count Chocula and raw meat. My outfit is not complete without my million spiked dog collars, and an upside down cross on my forehead.
Just kidding. My name is Allison. I live in Florissant, Missouri. That's in north St. Louis. I love goth rock, although I prefer darkwave and EBM. My favorite band is The Cruxshadows. I love learning more about culture and studying cultural anthropology. I also really love egyptology. I have an obsession with tattoos, piercings, and body modification in general. My hero is Stalking Cat, better known as "Catman".
Well that's me. I'm really happy to be here, and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, and getting to know you.

A darkwave fan who enjoys anthropology. That actualy reminds me, the University of Wisconsin Madison actualy has an anthropology professor with a darkwave/industrial band, or whatever you want to call their genre.

Nevermind, I found it.
1. What do you do? (Hobbies, job)
I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend, looking on the internet, going to my tattoo shop, getting new mods., reading about politics. I also enjoy listening to music.
2. Where are you from?
I live in Florissant Missouri, just north of St. Louis.
3. Who is your favorite author?
Well, sadly I don't read much. I have a very short attetion span. Although if I could concentrate long enough, I would quite enjoy reading a book. I read a few books in high school. I loved Interview with the Vampire, and The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice. I also read Carrie by Stephen King. I enjoyed those. I also read the first 10 chapters of Jane Erye, but for some reason never really got further into the book.
4. What are your favorite films?
My favorite movie is My Fair Lady. I also like Edward Scissorhands, The Breakfast Club. I enjoyed Interview with the Vampire, although I wish it would have folowed the book more.
5. What music do you want played at your wedding?
Well, since my family is going to attend, probably something tradtional. Most likely there will also be pop music. However I plan on having a seperate ceramony for friends, and things will be a bit more to my liking at that wedding
6. At your funeral?
I haven't really thought about that.
7. This IS a gothic website, so... how do you want to die?
In a great battle for the one I love.
8. What kind of casket would you want?
I am considering cremation. I think it would be easier on everyone.
9. What's your FAVORITE outfit?
I don't really have anything special. Just a black tank top and some black pants.
10. What's one thing you miss about being a little kid?
Nothing. I love the age I am now. I wouldn't go back.
11. What's your favorite band?
The Cruxshadows.
12. What kind of education do you have? What is/was/will be your major?
I graduated high school, took a course on cultural anthropology at the local community college and hope to get into Wash U sometime soon, and become a vet. tech.
13. Why did you join?
I wanted to converse with like minded individuals.
14. If the first 13 questions didn't give it away. What is your gender?
I am female.

Woah, we have the same name (save for a single L) and anthropological interests. Cool.
Is there any part of the world that particularly interests you, culture-wise?
I also like your screen name. Happens to be the name of my favourite shop on earth.

There are no particular parts of the world I am interested in, but the area of anthropology that I am quite interested in is body modification. From the giraffe neck women, to the women who have to get facial tattoos as a right of passage, to the catman and lizard man of our own western culture. It's all fasinating.

Haha, thanks. : D
I like people who compliment me, so welcome to the forum! :P
I'm actually also quite interested in body modification as a cultural practice and artistic practice, ritualistic, spiritual or otherwise. I'm vaguely associated with the Modern Primitive movement.
I'd love it if you could give me some detailed information, as I've really only vague reasons about other cultures modification practices. I'm particularly interested in the Masai, the Kayan and the Mursi tribes. I'm also interested in learning about ancient cultures practices, such as the ancient Egyptians and Chinese, but know little about it. We should discuss this some time. : )

Well, I like the giraffe neck woman of Bhurma. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of their tribe. They start at a young age adding more and more brass coils as they get older. It is seen as a sign of beauty in their tribe.

That's the Kayan, haha. I've read it started as a means to deter enemy villages from stealing their women, due to them finding it ugly. This seems similar to how the Chinese would give their women lotus feet, both as a sign of beauty, and as a form of crippling them to keep them from running away.

The Mursi also do their modifications (in their case lip plates) to prevent their women being taken by outsiders. It's pretty common in a lot of tribal cultures, and the modifications are almost always tied into beauty and 'value' of the women as well. The more extreme, the better dowry they'll get.
Then of course there are the rite of passage mods that can look pretty amazing. The scarrification practiced by the men in a certain Papua New Guinean tribe (who's name escapes me) turns into a form of stylised 'armour' from all the scar tissue that builds up. I think they get referred to as the crocodile men.

Yes, it seems as alot of those practices stem from controlling women somehow. Quite sad actually.

Female circumcision for example.
But really, there are just as many mods and painful practices for boys. A lot of these things arise from the need to face pain and hardship, since that is a large part of life for many of these people. Strength, endurance and stoicism are paramount for survival.

"The women of the Padaung hill tribe. . ."
I found that when I was looking up images of the women, so that is perhaps the tribe you're thinking of.
