I have a new foster kitten. She came to the Humane Society with a nasty upper respiratory infection, went through two courses of antibiotics, and after three weeks, was still living in a large dog crate due to a lack of space in the shelter.

I cleaned her cage last Friday, and as I was leaving the room, I saw her trying to play with a toy in the one square foot not taken up by food, water, and litter pan.

For some reason, the image of her pawing at a jingly ball haunted me. I see sad situations all the time- it's part and parcel of the job- but I couldn't stop thinking about her.

So last Saturday (after a lot of pleading and wheedling with the husband- and I've only kept two out of twenty or so fosters over the last five years), she moved into our library.

Elizabeth immediately made herself at home, and spent the next two hours running from toy to toy, pouncing, bristling, and doing that funny sideways kitten dance that never fails to make me laugh. So small. So badass. So painful when she claws her way up your leg and shirt, to ultimately sink those needle-sharp baby teeth into your neck.

She's settled down somewhat since then, and is having a great time in our house. She's still wicked undersocialized, and yet to learn that humans are not scratching posts. Today, with the help of a friend, I was finally able to clip her evilly sharp little claws. There should be a lot less bleeding going on here now.

Even though I set up four different beds for her, she has chosen to sleep behind a row of books on one of the bottom shelves. Whenever I go in to see her, I hear a tiny cry, and a small black head pops up; then she scrambles out over the books.

God, I just love kittens.

Let's see: No more philosophy journals next week. Woot. I'm spending a lot of my weekend writing these silly things. I'm on the third right now. I'm good with doing my homework but so lazy about these things. I'm really not sure why. Ah well, it must be done and I'll have some more free time next week even though I do need to review a few things in Statistics.
