Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Heard of both of them. Listened to them a fair bit in my student days (creak, creak).
Couldn't decide between the two, to be honest. It would depend on the day and the mood.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds actually do an excellent cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart.
Ian and Nick, both great singers.

Nick Cave. I love Joy Division, but Nick Cave captured my heart with "Murder Ballads".
I actually have a great great Aunt called Eliza Day (from "Where the Wild Roses Grow"). I thought that was interesting.

I think they are hard to compare and I like both...but if I have to choose, Nick Cave. I love his sarcasm.

Joy Division versus Nick Cave? Well, if it's Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, I'd choose Joy Division, but if it's the Birthday Party then it's a tough choice.
Both Ian Curtis and Nick Cave have incredible voices- dark, dreary, pain-ridden. But you can't really compare their bands, I think.

Joy Division....always Joy Division. Why? Because whilst they can be seen as a Velvet Underground knock-off, they actually (unlike that other big VU knock-off of the 70's David Bowie) went beyond the VU as far as style and content.
Nick Cave....OK, I'll admit that Cave is a hell of a writer (check out "The Ass Saw The Angel", or read the movie scripts he's written...or hell, just read the lyrics), and he's a cool guy to drink with, but everytime I hear the Bad Seeds, I think "wow, you REALLY wanna be Jim Morrison, don't you?", and Jim Morrison is somebody people should avoid trying to be. Sorry, but hearing the Mojo Rising just makes me cringe worse than a Marylin Manson/Britney Spears double bill, and reading his words makes me wish he'd do better music.

I prefer Joy Division to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Nick Cave did show the world what the Australian music scene had to offer.
But still, Ian Curtis's voice and genius offers a bit more variety.

I have heard of both of them Nick Cave (Bad Seeds/Birthday Party) is genius and I love Joy Divisions sound. I don't have a preference for one over the other...they are equally appealing and it just depends on what I feel like listening to as to whether I listen on one or the other.
