Smile Cover Songs

Cover songs what do you think??? should they be encouraged or stopped??? its something that occasionally pops up especially when some god awful shite boy band cover a song ( its an easy win music made by morons for morons). i use to feel that cover songs never capture the magic and the spirt of the original however three tunes ahve changed my mind and now my opinion of cover songs has become all hazy!!! the three of which i speak are:
Personal Jesus by Marilyn Manson ( dont like DM anyway!)
The Evil that Men Do by After Forever ( love both!!!!)
Hurt by Jonny Cash .............weep buckets!!!!!!

What you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Proper English skills are essential when speaking, especially when you expect some sort of reply.

Just a tip.

Now back to the subject, what do I think of cover songs? They're quite fine if you think you can "match up" with the original artist's version. There's so sense in covering something if you know its not as good as the original. If an artist covers too many songs, they put off an "I'm broke and I'm too lazy to write my own music," type thing. Here are some covers that made me want to gag:

Korn- Pink Floyd's the Wall
Deftones- Duran Duran's the Chauffeur
Marilyn Manson- Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus
311- The Cure's Love Song
Shinedown- Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man

Within Temptation did a bad ass cover of 'Running Up That Hill'. I think it's one of the best out of all their songs. Though I do enjoy Kate's version.

Placebo played a great version of "Running Up That Hill" as well. It's pretty much just a bloody good song to begin with.

AFI's cover of the Cure's "Hanging Garden" is what first got me into gothic rock. Therefore I'm of the rather biased opinion that all of AFI's covers are fucking amazing, especially the recent "Jack the Ripper" (originally by Morrissey).

Also, Bauhaus' cover of "Severance" by Dead Can Dance. I'm more fond of the original, but just the whole idea of Bauhaus covering a Dead Can Dance song is irresistible.

Ooh indeed. I do also love that version.

Y'know I heard that 'Theatres Des Vampires' (OTT female fronted gothic/metal italian band) did a cover of Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' but renamed it 'Can't Get You Out Of My Grave'. They recorded it for their 'Suicide Vampire' album. However they weren't allowed to use it, but some lucky people have managed to hear it....I bet it's damn good.

I'm usually not a big fan of cover songs but two I really liked were Lacrimosa's 'Phantom Of the Opera' cover and when Voltaire covered The Cure's 'Lovesong'

I tend not to listen to covers that often. Why? Because it's usually the same song, and not something I'm perticularily interested in. If I want to hear the song, why not just listen to the original?
But, there have been some good covers. My personal favorite was by Mushroomhead, a cover of the Seal song, "Crazy". It just seems cool, and sounds a bit different then the original.

I think only some bands should do covers, Nasum did a great Napalm Death and Carcass cover.

i personally love cover songs.. it's only if you're going to actually be good when you do it.. now cover bands is just another story... if you're going to be in a band, MAKE YOUR OWN GOD DAMN MUSIC!! like my band for example.. we play a few cover songs and write a lot of our own... but its sad when you have to use another bands material for your own.. oh well that's my take of this...

Channel-surfing, I ran into some reality TV show called Rock Star Supernova. There was this really pretty girl on it (Dilana), so I decided to keep watching it. I loved her voice... But her cover of I Want You To Want Me by Cheap Trick was terrible.

I think that if the band covering the original song has an understanding of the original band, it should turn out pretty well. Here are a few of my favorite cover songs:

Bauhaus-Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
Christian Death-Panic In Detroit (David Bowie
Christrian Death-Venus In Furs (Velvet Underground)
Lacrimosa-the Phantom of the Opera
Ex Voto-Riders on the Storm

By the way, if "Cry (Little Sister)" is what you were talking about, Slap Your Love, it was NOT by the Sisters of Mercy. I forget who it was by, but certainly not them.

I agree that it all comes down to how a cover song is done. If they are simply trying to recreate the origional song, I see no real point to it. However, if a musician is trying to do their own interpretation of the song, as long as they do it tastefully and within reason, then it may have some merit. Some of my personal favorites include: 'The Metro' - Bella Morte, 'Halo' - James D. Stark, 'Obsession' - The Azoic (mainly because I never expected to hear that song covered), 'Fatal Beating' - Hybrid, '(Seasons) Don't Fear the Reaper' - Liquifaction. Occasionally I come across a cover that just leaves me in a state of confusion, I want to laugh, but at the same time, I'm too dumbfounded to know what to do, such as when Epsilon Minus covered 'lowrider'.

I've never heard to original, but Lacuna Coil's 'Stars' was pretty damn good.

I also like Kate Bush's take on 'Rocket Man'.

*gasps* You've never heard of Kate Bush? She's been around since the late 1970's!

She's not gothic, but she has held a great influence over singers such as Liv Kristine from Leaves Eyes & Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation; groups from the surge of female fronted gothic metal.

I'm not sure whether she'd be your cup of tea though, Persephone (from what I assume your tastes are). Her lyrics are usually very narrative & her vocals can be soft & delicate or shocking & screechy.

I was brought up listening to her & have only recently began listening to her stuff on my own accord.

Thus ends my tutorial on Kate Bush.

You know, I heard that was a cover song, but I still have NO idea who originally did it.
