Disappointed hero-worshippers are sure to be around (and they get what they deserve), but personally, I'd be just as chagrined if any intelligent and knowledgable member of these boards jumped on the Twilight train. It's difficult to reconcile respect and contempt.

Why feel contempt? It's just a movie. Don't like it, don't watch it. Having such a visceral reaction says to me that you take Peter Murphy's actions personally, like you've been betrayed.

The visceral reaction is really more toward Twilight itself. I don't want it having any legitimacy whatsoever, and though I can't control that, I can still hate it with the burning passion of a thousand suns. Why do I hate it so much? Probably because, deep down, I really do like the vampire mythos and feel quite upset that they've evolved from frightening, walking corpses to fashionable arm candy. Twilight's only the latest stage of that evolution, but it is the most groan-inducing. If it had been well-written or had, really, any redeeming qualities at all, I might not hate it so. As for Murphy's involvement, that's just one more undesirable connection to the subculture - there have been many attempts, and most of them, thankfully, come across as forced and without credibility, but this one's a bit harder to disown. I suppose if it gets personal anywhere, it gets personal when it hits close to home.

I'm with you about being frustrated by how the vampire mythos has changed, but there's nothing to be done except zen it out. Ignore it and it will, like every other fad, go away.

Don't lament the demise of the vampire mythos - cracked.com writers have now proved that the reasons humans believe in monsters is because they're dicks.

It's science.

Thumbs up

I remember reading some place or other that the modern day idea of vampires comes from prostitutes, when syphilis was rampant. Sexy people who you want to bang, get too close to them and with their wily ways they infect the shit out of you. Whether or not that's true, I love it.

Hey! JDATE - I rather enjoyed that when it was being published online in installments.

I'm feeling slightly more Zen, but it's taking an effort that feels distinctly un-Zen-like ; ) Time, I'll give it time.

Truly not giving a damn his much harder than it looks. I've still not mastered it. Plenty of things I'd like to not give a flying fuck about still snag my time and attention.

Also, I'm going to read Twilight. I need to settle for myself if the book's as bad as the rabid mud-slingers say it is. I suppose if it really sucks I can just, like, put it down.

Unless it ends up being something you don't give a flying fuck about but still snags your time and attention.

Based on the level of intelligence PAPH has shown so far I'd say it will be an easy read. They are written to the level of mid-teens I'd say. When I read the books i was able to get through them in anywhere from 3-7 days depending on the demands of the other humans and felines of the house. If I was single and got my hands on them I could have started Friday afternoon and be done by Sunday night guaranteed.

Hopefully. It's nice to read something easy sometimes. If it's a good story, I'll have that. If it isn't, I'll at least be able to criticize Twilight in a more informed and reserved manner. Or I might just trap-shoot it, who knows?

I you want to read it them go for it, it is easy and you should be able to finish quite quickly, I will warn you that I have never before not finished a book because I have a compulsion to know the end of the story but my dislike for the book completely overwhelmed my compulsion to know how it ended and the last chapter remains unread. Honestly if it was my own copy I would have torched it but my roommate would not have been pleased.

Duly noted. At least I'll have an idea of how it's written. Whether or not I understand the visceral hatred that it provokes is another matter entirely.

My suspicion is that it IS as poorly written as some people say, which would totally negate the "who cares what it is as long as it gets people reading" argument. The Harry Potter series, for example, wasn't high literature, but it was decently-written. Harry Potter has probably spurred a lot of people who did not previously read to try new books. Love it or hate it, that's an admirable thing. Twilight, on the other hand, if it really is as poorly written as I've heard it claimed, may not have that same stimulatory effect, and readers may not be induced to go and read other books. I honestly hope that this is not the case, because, whether or not I like the content, I would like to think that audiences are being intellectually strengthened by the act of reading.

I guess I'll just have to read it and find out. I will, however, be borrowing rather than buying.

Don't you guys know not to question your deities?!?! He did it because he's MORE Goth than you!!!

Peter Murphy appears in Eclipse because he enjoys your pain! He thrives on the black tears I cried like a fat kid does when he hears, "...I brought Oreo's!!!"

Plus, everybody knows the most 'Goth' thing of all is to be 'Not A Goth', and the ultimate apostasy, in the better part of our eyes, was obvious.

Peter, you sly devil.

Ahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Thunder cracks.)
