Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Kontan didn't call you a poser. But yeah, you are a poser. You care about posing as a goth.
"Please help me, how do I look goth?"
"Please help me, is my music goth?"
That's being a poser. And a loser.

This thread is making me feel like I'm 16 again. Almost makes me too embarrassed to ever admit that I was a teenager.

Cannibal Corpse are sellouts. Lamb of God are shit, and nowhere close to death metal.
I'm with DoubleK though, like what you like for what it is. Don't try to make all your interests conform to the same bullshit label. Hell, I hate goth music for the most part and I still love this forum.

It's a mood thing for me. I like more black, but there's some nasty death too:

And you also thought it might so happen that you like gothic music but you had to make sure?
By the way, I'm willing to bet what you think the 'goth look' that it just so happens you like, is more akin to something a Korn fan would wear, rather than a genuine deathrock outfit.

For me it depends on the death metal, 90% of what comes out today as "death metal" is just not something I'd like. I rather prefer the old school stuff, Benediction, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, that stuff. Same goes for grind, and black metal, Darkthrone, older-Mayhem, Nifelheim, and if I'm really jamming out, folk black metal in the vein of Isengard.

I think the gothic look has nothing to do with Korn. When I see the Korn singer, I think that he would be wearing mostly black, and he would wear some neon bracelets and stuff like that. Haha, jk.
Everyone has their own style of goth clothing. For me, it is Black combat boots, with the usual black jeans and a band T-shirt. But my jeans are used so much, they are starting to look white. >.< I don't do makeup though...

That's not the goth look. That's just wearing black in a very utilitarian manner.

Agreed.
The idea of what 'gothic' fashion looks like these days, and what 'gothic' style really is, is so skewed.
"LOLWUT? Look at my Tripps and black shirt! I'm so goth. My mom let me dye my hair black and I sneak eyeliner on at school. I love my armwarmers and shitty dog-collar from HotTopic. It's my favorite store, you know."
Ugh.

We're not being elitist goths or anything. But the goth look as it really was and as it most faithfully has evolved is quite specific.
What pisses me off is that most people do what you're doing, treytonator. You say contradictory statements:
I just happen to like the goth look.
The goth look is whatever someone wants it to be
So why call it goth in the first place? You clearly do care about the name.

There is a goth look?
I must buy it at once! I haste, I hurry!
Ah, wait. I'm not even goth. Bummer.

It kind of helps if one, you know, likes the music. Just listening to it ... well.
And as a sidenote, if you wear a band patch (Which I understand some people like to do ... although I seem to remember the punks considering that sort of thing horribly commercial and a big no-no. That might be a local thing though, or an abandoned practice. ) know the band in question. Listen to them. Like them. Or actually, do it the other way around. Wear patches marketing bands you like.
But as I said. I'm no goth. Nor am I a punk anymore. Though the love for the music lingers. Both genres.
So, my views may be ... totally off.

Actually, this is all valid as well. Haha so very few things you need to do to become a real goth. Haha

No, I found a look that I liked, and then I looked at the different styles that there was. For example, emo, goth, scene, and even prada....I think I matched with the goth style the best. But I'm not the stereotypical type either...I hate The Cure, and all the other mands you listed...that is my mom's music...=P
