I know for a fact Blockbuster has Audition. It's a Japanese "When Harry Met Sally", you'll love it.

I also know they have Suicide Club, albeit edited, it's still worth a watch.

May! Rent May!

It's a book? You mean a manga? I knew Battle Royal, Uzumaki, and Tomie were manga (never read one) but Suicide Circle?

I bet it's different, then  There's a short story called "The Suicide Club" by Robert Luis Stevenson.

Jane-I'm pretty sure RLStevenson wasn't familiar with subways or teeny-bop bands.

Al-Actually, I saw "Red Dawn" back when it came out, and yeah, it fit in with my "GI Joe" playtime, but even then I knew it was a reactionary wet dream. Hell, that's why I loved it so much (and still do)! Plus, it wasn't as boring as "Amerika" (which I rewatched recently....ughh).

BTW, have you seen "Shikoku" yet? Curious as to your thoughts on it.

And also to whet your appetite....they're finally releasing a box set of Kinji Fukasaku's "Yakuza Papers" cycle of films ("Battles Without Honor And Humanity" was actually the first film from this cycle). The transfer for "Battles....", from what I saw, is beautiful.

I saw the Grudge today..
All I can say is

OMFG AL, YOU FUCKING SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!
JEZUS!!!!!!!!!
GAWD!!!!!!!!!!
I'm still shaking in my boots!

I mean, I'm not easily scared, I'm jumpy, but not scared.
This movie made me SCARED.

I thought I was going to bite my tongue off.. even during the SECOND SCENE, so I put my thumb in my mouth.
For one thing, I'm sweating profusely right now,
another thing, my boots touched the ground for 5 minutes during the whole movie.
THe rest of the movie, I was in a fetal position hoping to god nothing would grab my ankles.

So, not only that, but my thumb is bleeding because I bit it too hard, and I'm still shaking.

o m g.

Al..
oi.
>_<

Don't worry Al, I probably won't blink for weeks when I see it if you reacted like that!

I already said this on the "what did you do today" thread, but I watched "Saw", because EPS shilled it, and she rocks.

I'll start from the start...

At first, I didn't really want to watch it, because my friend just downloaded it, and, eh- downloading *movies* that are *still in theatres* ... I don't know, I'm not a fan of such practices, even though movie ticket prices are ridiculously high.

*Anyways* Saw- We started watching it with the lights off, but, about 3/4 of the way through, I got up and just turned on the lights. Toooooo scary... but I don't know how much weight my word holds- I'm scared of moths for Christ's sake...

On to the movie: The psychology in the movie was extremely interesting. The idea of what humans do, instinctively, when put in life-or-death, insane-ass, unfathomable situations interests me a lot.

The kills in the movie all involved this type of psychology in their insane creativity. They were absolutely horrifying, even though the gore was minimal.

All-in-all... Four stars? I don't now how that star-system works... It was good, especially for a non-80's horror film... (call me old-fashioned  )

See it!

EPS shilled it?! oh no no no no missy...well yeah...but uh...I heard of it first!

So you'd rather download movie illegally than see the movie I've been shilling since the dawn of time?!

Was Saw worth it overall?

Isn't that a great one? It has all the actors in it that I really hate... but the movie was awesome.

Now that I've read everyone's informal Grudge reviews, I shall go and watch it... must find someone cute to go with though. I find that scary movies are a great excuse to hold hands.

Nick Hamm's , The hole
based on Guy Burt’s book, After the Hole
I have been looking for this movie since 2001 but no one in the area had ever heard of it(hastings, blockbuster).
Some friends called me up earlier this evening and asked if I wanted to watch the movie they had rented...Hastings had finally gotten this thing in.

I will say that it was not what I had anticipated and I am still up in the air as to whether or not I enjoyed it.
Instead of a dark, broody, gritty movie with things lurking in the shadows it centered around on very disturbed girl(thora birch) gets away with a very twisted plot to gain the love of a boy by locking her, him, and two of their friends in a war bunker.
Things go down hil from there.

Interesting to say the least

Ju-On 2.

Fucking mandiapple said it was better than the first.

It was not.

Whole different direction in this one, real plot heavy until the end, when the plot goes south.

I think, I am not sure, that they are implying that...well to spill that possible secret you have to know that Toshio touches the stomach of a pregnant woman who later "gives birth". Well the "spawn" is preceeded by Kayako crawling out of the woman's...uh..."birthing canal". Later we see the woman and the "spawn" when she's about four or five. A look that she gives through her hair that is hanging over her face is the same look you see in Ringu. I might be over analyzing it though.

Van Helsing

*Possible Spoiler*

If you've ever read classic literature, this movie basically butchered it all. They tried to tie in Dracula with Frankenstien while adding a nice dose of James Bond to the whole mess.

It's like the writers took a passing glimps at these stories, stole the characters, and left everything else behind. In this film, apparently the only way you can kill Dracula is as a lycanthrope? Yeah, the other obivous tools, such as holy water and stakes are expirmental myths in this film.

As far as storyline goes, they pushed too much too fast and tried to make you feel some sort of emotion while you are strapped into a rollercoaster of visuals and plot twists. We see one character for about 2 minutes, then he dies and suddenly the audience is supposed to feel a deep connection with his sister everytime she cries over him.

Dracula's brides were the worst actresses ever to be cast in a film. For the majority of the time, they weep-in-place. They don't cry... they just stand still and lean forward, holding out their hands and growning. It looks worse than it sounds because it really is. The lead heorin is about as cliche as they get. Strong, over-dominate female role that doesn't fit the time period at all.

There was a whole truck load of bad decisions the writers and director took to even mention them all in a timely fashion. Bottomline: TV is the best place to catch this one. If you rent it, it'll surely give you a real bang for your buck. Right in the skull.

I didn't pay to see that one.

But I was eager to see something other than the old stake-through-the-heart-and-holy-water cliche'.I wouldn't recomend paying to see it,but if you forget everything you've ever seen in cinema and read in books, then it's an entertaining piece of fiction for an hour and a half.

And as for the actors, for the money these goobers are paid, you'd think they could do a better job!Why the hell do morons like these get paid so much money for doing jack, while people with real jobs break their backs and are still behind on rent?

Bah!

Van Helsing - quite possibly the worst movie ever made. I know this will draw irate shouts, but...jeez.

There were holes in that plot you could build freeways through. Just seeing an ad or DVD cover of that movie gives me a pain behind the eyes. Yeesh.

Living Hell (Iki-jigoku}

Hirohito Honda is Yasu, a wheelchair-bound young man who lives with his dad, siter and brother.

The film starts out in a family’s home where a grandmother and a granddaughter brutally murder a couple. In what has to be one of the most original death scenes I've ever seen, the grandmother takes a beetle of some sort, puts it in a glass, and presses the glass over a woman's eye, wheren the insect does something to fill the glass with blood.

The old lady is found at the home by police and deemed senile, and locked away, where she escapes and winds up with the granddaughter at their distant relative's home, which happens to be Yasu's.

The girl doesn't speak, and the grandmother, when she does, leads everyone to believe she isn't all there.

The gist of the movie is everyone has to go to work during the week, leaving Yasu alone with them.

While alone, the female duo proceed to torture the poor hapless bastard. No one buy's his story, since he is anti-social. So everyday that they leave, he is at their mercy, or lack thereof.

This movie touts itself as being The Texas Chainsaqw Massacre without chainsaws. To an extent the begining of the third act is. At this point the movie is great, and ingenius in the way they show Yasu's POV with a couple of continous shots of the mayhem. The room is lit just so that it really is creepy.

Then it indeed goes to Hell.

The overacting by a couple of the actors is embarrasing, reminded me of Bollywood, and the plot, holy shit, takes a "turn" that has more loose ends than a porn star convention. Sorry that was bad.

But seriously the middle and end of the third act negate the rest of the film and it is sad. I see this alot in Japanese horror films, but they've still cornered the market in terms of content and presentation.

This is a low-budget movie but doesn't try to be more than that, so you forget early on of it's limits. Established camera angles and settings are rather striking at times.

This movie is more of a dark dark comedy than a horror flick, and I think you're allowed to giggle at certain instances without being deemed a sicko.

But who here does't want that label?

It sure did.

I never got scared, but I did enjoy it through out.

The uncut DVD has scenes that show the parts you just heard offscreen (like the zombie janitor getting shot). That's alright, but I think the movie was better with a bit of subtlety in certain parts.
