Well at least you're honest with both yourself and others about that fact. There are quite a few people out there who refuse to remain open to the fact that they are horribly misinformed about what goth is, many of which we have had to deal with here on these forums.
Now first off I just want to make sure you know, whether or not you ever fully embrace the concept of being a goth, it doesn't mean you can't date goths(plenty of goths date and marry non goths), so no matter what happens don't despair.
Now the one of the big things you should know about goth is it's all about the music. So with that in mind here is a sample starter pack of goth bands you should check out: Bauhaus, The sisters of mercy, Siouxsie and the banshees, sex gang child, cinema strange.
Now many out there would have you believe that some bands and music in particular out there have anything to do with goth, whereas that is anything but the truth. That being said you can listen to them if you want and enjoy them just as much as any person, just don't expect to walk into a goth club and hear that music playing. Such bands include marilyn manson, avenged sevenfold, um that one band I've been seeing more and more pop up with five guys in stereotypical(false sterotypical) gothic dress(I'm bad with names), as well as the metal and emo genres.
The clothing and outfits take a backseat to the music, and is entirely up to you. Though a word to the wise, I've heard plenty of bad things of the quality of tripp clothing (not to mention I'm not fond of the appearance). Also the store Hot Topic, I don't like it myself but I hear they sometimes have something decent, though they love plagiarizing ideas from what I've heard so don't cross your fingers.
That'll be all for now. Might want to do the intro questions located here:

Oh and welcome to gothic.net.... You might wake up hungover in the morning, inspite of the fact that we have been out of alcohol for months.
