One of my GF's daughters told us she knows a guy whose Live Journal name makes her laugh. His L J handle?

How the hell could they ever be classified as "emo"?

This seems to be a characteristic of youth movements attempting to emulate older and more established/mature ones - they get their gimmick, fine, but then think that somehow they have to be that and only that, and so in order to still like the so called "non-emo" shit they liked before, they simply lump it all together haphazardly. It's a product of an inability to think outside of compartmentalized categories, which since they're teens can't really be faulted them, but... there it is. In my opinion.

I always wanted to make some kind of Tamasicky, where you wander around and the point is to infect your little critter with as much shit as you can before he mutates and creates resistances to things, and you have to start over, and if you're lucky, he mutates into his own disease which can then infect everyone else's machine, and... yeah. Gotta catch 'em all, etc etc. Maybe there could even be a special Valentine's Day edition...

But hey thanks!

What I don't like about emo is that they have a very specific dress code. If you don't dress emo, then you're not emo, you're just either depressive, whiny, or a wannabe. It takes away a lot of originality.

Hehe, yes! And, if you search http://video.google.com for the emo video, you can see a video spoofing emo's that was filmed like an old 50's B&W educational film. Har!

I could never get a straight answer out of any emo kids as to what the fuck emo actually is. The best I've gotten is a link to a picture of some Green Day copycat and the girlish answer, "He is sooooooooo totally emo!"

Emo, to me, at least, is just a bunch of kids crying for attention. Emo brings to mind a 17 year old girl my mother treated one night in the E.R.

This girl took half a bottle of sleeping pills in the attempt to kill herself. Her explanation? "Well, my parents never let me go out with my friends anymore."

Am I being intolerant? Ha, ha; perhaps I am.

It's kind of funny... I know at least five straight people that say "Man! That's so flippin' hetero it's not even cool..."

Oh, I have a question. I think that one of the first songs about EMO behavior is "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats. What does anyone else think?

That song is about a teen killer, who when questioned why she did it answered 'I don't like Mondays.'. You probably knew that already.

Bah, I'm going to confuse myself.
The term emo is originally short for "emotional hardcore", which is what the first bands, Embrace, Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, etc. were often referred to as.

That's as succinct an explanation as I can give right now. Emo "dissertation" still pending...

Not in (t)his thread, though.

I sure am glad everything I ever wanted to know about "Emo" is available online! Check out those fashion tips:
Some pointers about emo fashions (above simple, universal hardcore attire)

* the Emo Romulan look - short, thick, greasy, dyed-black hair with bangs cut straight across the forehead, and cut high over the ears. Someone from Time In Malta recently described to me the San Diego Crimson Curse scene as "Spock Rock."
* actually, any greasy dyed black hair. Bangs in front and spikes in back is very emo too.
* horn-rim glasses, or at least thick black frames.
* bald head, furry face (boys only). Goes especially well with horn-rims.
* heavy slacks, often too tight and short.
* thin, too-small polyester button-ups in dark colors, or threadbare children's size t-shirts with random slogans. Button the collar if you got one.
* clunky black shoes
* scarves
* gas station jackets. This has diffused a lot over the years though, it's no longer exclusive to emo kids. Nowadays, you may want to select a nice corduroy denim jacket.
* also classic outerwear but quickly diffusing to normality: the famous Blue Peacoat
* barrettes on boys
* make-up (male or female)
* too-small cardigans and v-neck sweaters
* argyle
* anorexic thinness. Veganism helps here.

To Disfunction, post before ignored person:

Yeah, I came across that a while ago. It's a good page. Not up to date with a whole bunch of bands that have been in the last eight years, but an informative 101 nonetheless.
