Black and White Films
The best black and white film would have to be Night of the Living Dead produced in 1968, which was directed by George A. Romero

I love black and white films. I really started enjoying them a few months ago when I was sick with an infection and had to stay in bed all day for a while. I had nothing else to do but read and watch TV, and LO I discovered AMC and TCM.
I have never seen Night of the Living Dead, though.

It's hard just to lump them all as "black and white films" because there's genres within that. But I like the silent films, the more decrepit the better. I mostly just take interest in how they ever existed with that technology back then... it's quite a feat.

How about Ed Wood? Not an old movie, but it is black and white. And awesome.

I love silent movies - I haven't seen many, although I'm working my way through the site Shyantra linked to. Definitely love The Phantom of the Opera, Night of the Living Dead and Nosferatu. I'm currently downloading "The House of Haunted Hill" (starring Vincent Price) and "The Little Shop of Horrors".

I've never been a huge fan of black and white movies... but I really like black and white photography. The only black and white movie I like is Young Frankenstein.

Check out Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast"... You'll see the origin of many modern cinematic gothic images.
And I CANNOT believe no one mentioned Todd Browning's "Freaks"

I cant believe im even going to mention these. But iv recently been watching the "Road To..." films, with Bob Hope. Which have reminded me why i liked the old black and white comedies so much. My favorites definatly have to be the Marx Brothers. Back in the days when fantastic timing and slapstick were essential. Plus Groucho is most definatly the greatest person in the history of cinema for shameless quoting.

I've been to a couple silent movies in the theater. Sunrise was one. I can't remember the name of the other. It had Buster Keaton in it. I've also seen the Lost World.

I caught "Gaslights" again. That Angela Lansbury was quite the dish.

God, I love Black and White films. Usually the effects (because of the day and age) are terrible, but there is much more meaning retained in those movies than newer ones.

Why do you think that is?
I always though that the lack of color sucked the visual disteactions down to the minimal, made you pay attention to the story more. It almost forces you into telling a good story because the visuals aren't there to distract from the acting

I think it's also because people were not so immersed in wanting action and such, so the story could go on truly without obligation.
