Cannibal draws unusual distinction

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - A German cannibal who killed a man who wanted to be eaten told a court Monday that he had only been carrying out his victim's wishes and had not expressly sought to kill him.

"I wanted to eat him, but I didn't want to kill him," Armin Meiwes, 44, told judges in three hours of testimony at his retrial.

Meiwes was sentenced in January 2004 to 8-1/2 years for manslaughter, but the Supreme Court ruled last April that the judges had been too lenient and ordered a retrial.

He had admitted killing Berlin-based computer specialist Bernd-Juergen Brandes, 43, but was spared a murder conviction and a possible life sentence because the victim had demanded to be eaten.

Bizarre New Testimony At Gay Cannibal Trial

When police searched Meiwes' home they discovered neatly wrapped body parts in plastic bags which were labeled "according to cuts". Bones and other "non edibles" were found buried in the garden. Meiwes told police he already had consumed about 40 pounds of Brandes's body.

He told police that the two men had enjoyed a final meal together. Brandes had agreed to be castrated and the two sautéed his penis and testicles. They washed down the meal with a German white wine.

Meiwes testified on Monday that he hoped Brandes, 43, would "die all by himself" from having his penis cut off.

I just thougt this story was bizarre and merited comment. Now, Dahmer ate his victims but they weren't at all willing. In this case, the victim wanted to be eaten. Which makes me ask, "what kind of sick asshole WANTS to be devoured?"

The members of the rock band Rammstein might stand a trial soon. The main character of one of the most scandalous songs of the band, the cannibal Armin Meiwes, a convicted prisoner, is suing the musicians for using his story with a commercial purpose. He says, they didn't even ask permission.

Rammstein dedicated their "Mein Teil" hit to Meiwes. It had been released as a single not long before their new album “Reise Reise” in 2004.

The story of Armin Meiwes was widely covered in the German media. A few years ago, he killed his friend Bernd Juergen Brandes and then ate him up. They got acquainted through the Internet. According to the cannibal, the victim had asked him to do that, so he can’t be put to trial for the murder. Meiwes was sentenced to eight and a half years of imprisonment. The discussion is still going whether the court decision was right or not: the prosecution are for lengthening the term that the court have decided on, as that was the punishment for cannibalism, not murder.

"I was really interested to find out about why he would want to kill a man and eat him," guitarist Richard Kruspe said in one of his interviews in 2004. - What I figured out was that Meiwes' mother totally destroyed all kinds of relationships he had in his childhood. So, he felt that if he did this, his victim would stay with him forever. It was just a really interesting story, so we decided to make a song about it."

Armin Meriwes also brought an action against the film-makers of the “Butterfly: A Grimm Love Story”, that is also based on his story. However, this situation is much simpler; as marked in the claim, Meiwes has already sold the rights for film production to some other company. "I feel as though I have been used," complains the cannibal.
