Cannibalism in North Korea
From http://www.mayhem.net/Crime/cannibals1.html
(By the way, I copied this verbatim, so disregard the typos and misspellings)
Cannibalism in North Korea: On October 7, 1997, ABC News reported that starving North Koreans are now resorting to cannibalism for sustenance. "People are going insane with hunger. They even kill and eat their own infants," said a North Korean military officer who fled to China with his family. Another North Korean who got out said that in his home city of Wonson a husband and wife were executed in May for murdering 50 children and storing their salted flesh in a hut.
New reports of cannibalism in North Korea have surfaced in a TV documentary about the 200,000 orphans being raised by this Communist state. Carla Garapedian, producer of Children of the Secret State, a BBC-Channel 4 co-production, said that her interviews with refugees escaping North Korea revealed, "acts of unspeakable barbarism not seen since Pol Pot's Cambodia". In an article for the Japanese Daily Yomiuri newspaper she writes: "(The) footage is shocking. Starving children abandoned by the state. Orphans thrown into state asylums and left to die." According to the filmmaker farmers have been ordered by the government stop growing food and grow opium. "The opium would then be processed by the state into heroin and then sold abroad. The proceeds would go to arm the military."
In her article the documentarian describes the drawings of 15-year-old Jang Gil-su, who with his family fled North Korea and is now living in China. The pictures, given to Garapedian by a refugee support group in Seoul, depict families eating pine bark, rats, snakes and anything else to stay alive. "All of the North Koreans we interviewed knew about it. Jang's picture of a dismembered child in a cooking pot says more than any of the numbing statistics," Garapedian wrote.
And also anoter site reporting the same thing halfway through an interview here:

I've heard a lot of weird stuff out of North Korea. They do chemical and biological weapon experiments on their own people. And use water torture: shoving a hose down your throat and forcibly filling you up with water till it comes out of every orifice on your body, then placing a board on your abdomine and jumping on it.
I have mixed feelings about the threat of North Korea. On the one hand, they're completly friggin' insane and have big big bombs, but on the other, they're so universally reviled and self-destructive how could they possibly keep it together long enough to cause us real damage?

Truth is, they don't have the means for a large scale invasion.
Sure they have a huge army and lots of weapons. But not enough logistics. They would quickly run out of food. The only invading they would really be doing would be to grab food and supplies.. or just be a nuisance.

Oh, but that being said.. they would probably be rabid fighters since they are so well brainwashed..
It would be one of those, take no prisoners war... like many of the battles in the pacific islands...

official website of North Korea
Here is the propaganda/public relations website for the 'Democratic' People's Republic of Korea. Whenever I visit the site, it causes me to laugh hystarically.

That's just all sorts of wrong. I've heard of the government asking the farmers there to start raising these giant rabbits that are the size of a medium sized dog.
I'll try to scare up the article if I can remember where on earth I read it.

I'm thinking that a strategicly placed nuke could do enough without a full scale invasion. Not to mention the more likely possibility that they'll sell weapons to our enemies. Bombs really are n. korea's #1 export, you know.

...and no one else think this article smacks of propaganda itself? Much like the prop that was put out there about the Russians during the cold war - most of it was just that - all shite put out by the U.S. government to drum up support against communism.
The same happened in WW2 - they claimed, before they knew about the death camps, that Germans ate babies, among other things that were posted in random U.S. publications.
North Koreans have the option of going to China wherever they feel the urge. It's why the Chinese help the N. Koreans - if the government did collapse there, there would be a huge influx of refugees which they would have to deal with. Tis why they make sure N. Korea does ok. If things were so bad people were actually eating their own children, one would think not only China would step in but also the U.N. and other world communities.
To even imply the people in an area would resort to cannibalizing their own children BEFORE appealing to the world for need like you see now in various impoverished nations is not only offensive to the people who live there, no matter what their political or ideological values are, but really begs the question - where is the proof of this other than the reference to an article that the poster said he read a decade ago?

It is good to have a healthy dose of skepticism Captain. We do have the example of invented news, when Dan Rather of CBS was so anxious to broadcast propaganda against Bush that he went with the invented letter, expecting everyone to believe the lie. If it has happened before, it can happen again. The news is not gospel.

The news is all lies, lies I tell ya. Cannibalism is N. Korea is probably true. If you have a famine, are in a landlocked country that isn't naturally hospitable to crops, cannibalism is just a natural progression of things.

What exactly is N.Korea trying to prove or accomplish here?
I wonder if someone send them DVDs of the Hannibal Lecter trilogy and got them convinced that cannibalism is a new fad or something.
