I'm sorry, I had to post some Poe...
P.S. all that I wrote here and my previous post are memorised. That's why the spelling is so-so and I'm sure my puctuation is off. I don't want to go research... (SEE! bad spelling, go summer!)

"Misery is manifold. The wretchedness of the earth is multiform, Overreaching the wide sky as the rainbow. Its hues are as various as the hues of that arch, as distinct too, and as intimately blended overreaching the wide sky as the rainbow! How is that from beauty I have derived a type of unlovliness? From the covenent of peace, a similie of sorrow? Well, as in Ethics, Evil is a consequence of Good so, out of joy sorrow is born. Either the memory of past bliss is the anguish of to-day or, the agonies which are have their origin in the escasies which might have been." -E. A. Poe
I had to dress up as him for a living timeline in 8th grade...

again, pardon my spelling...

Tell the truth or trump-but get the trick.

Adam was but human-this explains it all. He did not wantthe apple for the apple's sake; he only wanted it because it was forbidden. The mistake was in not forbidding the serpent; then he would have eaten the serpent.

I'm counting poems, since I don't have any prefered conventional quotes right now.

"Self-Pity" by D. H. Lawrence

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

"We Wear the Mask" by Paul Laurence Dunbar

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes--
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but oh great Christ, our cries
To Thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

"Dieing is the day worth living for!"

I remember Wizard of Earthsea! We had to read the first book in grade 8. And man I've been looking for the other two books but alas to no avail.

"I'll love you forever
I'll like you for always
As long as I'm living
My baby you'll be." -Robert Munch, from Love You Forever

That book makes my mom cry, and the only serious book I remember Robert Munch writing. I remember mom gave me a cassette tape of him reading some of his books, and Love You Forever was on it. The way he read it made it extra sad. Man, Robert Munch was awesome.

EDIT: Out of nostalgia I just looked up his website, he said he wrote that story after he and his wife had two stillborns

This is from Doris Lessing
"You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture. The slightest look at history will show how impermanent these must be. You are being taught by people who have been able to accomodate themselves to a regime of thought laid down by their predecessors. It is a self-perpetuating system. Those of you who are more robust and individual than others, will be encouraged to leave and find ways of educating yourself-educating your own judgement. Those that stay must remember, always and all the time, that they are being moulded and patterned to fit into the narrow and particular needs of this society."
