While I disagree about this movie and hate the movie in general, I have a new found respect for the way you think.

It's your taste that sickens me!
I think I put the quantifier of reality in my wording, let me check…yep, I said a boy losing his virginity to reality, but I think you know what I meant.

As for the story failing to get that message across, it’s not from a lack of trying. A reference is made about the boy and his father’s relationship in the car while traveling to the weekend home, directly after getting to the home, when he goes to the store and receives the Wendigo carving. The time we spend in the home, cleaning dishes, playing games, and interacting reinforces the idea that the family is trying hard to reconnect. During this time we are given flashes and foreshadows in the form of a mysterious wind, a fog, and of moving shadows through trees from the son. He knows something bad is coming, we know something bad is coming, but we see it from his (the boy’s) eyes and as children are apt to do; the bad thing took the illogical form of a boogeyman. As a horror movie it does exactly the opposite of most horror movies and plays down the boogeyman aspect in favor of the true life experience.

The boy loses his father to a random act of stupidity, his mother and his life are forever marked by that change, which is presented in a tasteful manner at the end with the image of the father’s shoes in the empty hallway.

I think the problem people have with this movie is real expectations. It’s the difference between going to the burger joint and expecting a greasy conglomeration of fats, proteins, carbohydrates with a thin pickle on top, and receiving instead (as Suicide pointed out) Foie Gras on crusted toast with a thin truffle atop. I was happy to find the mistake in my bag, but most of you are not as forgiving. I can live with that.
ok.. with this explanation that you gave Mr. Stone, i understand the movie in a different light.. now it makes sense.. so now i can see it two ways.. a very subtle story of family dynamics (albeit a little too subtle for your average moviewatching insomniac at 2 AM) i think i should get ahold of someone and get them to stop misrepresenting this as a scary creature feature.. because scary it is not.. and the creature better known as GIANT PLASTIC DEER MAN!! was the biggest joke since the blair witch project

thank you TStone for making this movie a 2 for 1.. an intellectual piece on family dynamics, and a raging guffaw fest at that wonderful critter known as the GIANT PLASTIC DEER MAN!

heh thanks! sorry 'bout the spleen. See what that crappy movie does? It ruptures internal organs!

Oh and I know the last movie EPS saw...AUDITION! hahahahahaha

Kiri kiri kiri...Kiri kiri kiri...

ow she hit me in the face with a pillow. I know that sounds light but she hit really freaking hard. See, I tell Manimal what movies NOT to watch, he does, and EPS gets mad at ME! How fair is that? It's not I tell you! He rents them from Netflix and gets all the hot sex, I get hit and kicked. Life is so unfair.

Al-I have this vision that if you ever meet Kier-La Janisse, you two are going to hit it off so well that you'll end up married 24 hours later...I only fear what the spawn will end up like...

As far as "Giant Plastic Deer Man", it's nowhere near as god-awful as "The Killer Shrews"...in fact, we should the shrews from that filmduke it ut with Giant plastic Deer Man!!!! That would be awesome!!!!!!

Is she the chick that runs that film festival in Vancouver? Or did, she's in Texas last I heard.

I've never seen a pic of her, but you have me thinking one of us should procreate with her and create the coolest kid ever.

Actually you can, I am going to procreate with Sherri Moon.

Well, that won't work, Manimal thinks she's an airhead, so EPS won't let me.

Yeah, that's her. And yeah, she lives in Texas now.

I'd breed with her, but A-I've already gotr the most perfect children in the world, and B-She's a canadian living in Texas. Think about that for a second...as far as pics of her, I'll have to look. I thought I had some, but I'm sure my buddy has some (along with some...ummm...incriminating photos of myself after we discovered the one bar in Vancouver that A-allows smoking, B-forgot the concecpt of "last call", and C-were jopined by alcoholic film-stars and film-makers)

And actually, I think you should breed with Asia Argento. Now THAT would bring about interesting spawn.

Ghost in the Shell

Alrighty, as a quick prelude let me just say I'm not a fan of Anime at all. It's not the animation I dislike, it's the personalities and behavior that irk the shit out of me. Why do I say this? Because if you hear about some Anime flick being good from someone who likes shallow plots and even emptier characters, then uh... yeah I think I just said what I wanted to say without finishing my sentence. >.>

Anyways, onto the movie! I like very few movies... and I mean very few (at least all the way through). But Ghost in the Shell wasn't too damn bad. The plot has depth and the subject matter interested the hell out of me (i.e. government assassinations of foriegn diplomats, industrial espionage, government cover-ups, intellegence agencies basically attacking each other).

The main character ('The Major') was a nice change from your stereotypical female heroine. A woman character who can kick ass without rubbing the audience the wrong way with an overly-cocky attitude or feeding off this pro-feminist bullshit ("I've got to out-do all you male characters cause you've all got a higher social status"). That and the bull-dyke "I chew bullets in my spare time" personalities for women characters with weapons annoyes the ba-jesus out of me. So it was nice to see someone breaking the mold in that area.

As much as I liked this movie, there were still the Anime cliches that squirmed their way into the script that got on my nerves. While these two characters are on a boat, having a somewhat philasophical conversation, one of the characters (basically a robot) takes a sip of beer. Instead of explaining that elsewhere, the character pauses in the middle of the conversation and explains exactly how she can drink that beer, being a machine and all. The dialogue read like VCR instructions. Took me out of the movie right then and there when the script addresses the audience rather than the other characters. Anime flicks love to do that.

Other than the here and theres, I didn't have much beef with Ghost in the Shell. Well... aside from maybe the rampant superstition that runs throughout a technologically dominated world. But yeah. It was a well thought-out script, sound animation, and interesting (not distant) characters. The thing plays out like your standard anime film, but doesn't go off the deep end so many times like many of the other films do. I'd recommend it to anyone who finds the subject material of the film interesting.

The Village.

Well, ain’t this some stupid shit. Knight has yet to make a movie with a decent plot and he delivers the same brand of predictable elements and loose ends in this latest offering. It wasn’t I was disappointed ten minutes into the movie and realized why they couldn’t speak of those who shouldn’t be spoken of, or the Heneryesque ending, but it was the gaping hole he left in the ending, and the fact that 8 people couldn’t fuck that much in that amount of time and come out with an entire village.

The movie does have decent acting, and Knight does do a well enough job at directing, which was the only things that kept me from walking out, but me thinks he’d do better at adapting other’s stories than trying to peddle his own thin ideas. I’d like to see him do something like I Am Legend, or maybe make a decent King movie, than this crap.

Two thumbs in the ass for this one.

I Robot.

OK, a really good adaptation with the exception of choice of leading male. Don’t get me wrong, I like getting Jiggy with it, but this isn’t a movie one gets Jiggy with. I’d have preferred a more dramatic leading male, someone who could have brought out the depth of A’s character, but aside from that I enjoyed it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

The best part of the film is the shrews. They got dogs and taped on bits of fur and fake teeth, and everytime they show the "shrew", you see these dogs trying to shake their costumes off. It's so awesome!!!

But we need to have the shaky shrews and the giant plastic deer man duke it once and for all!!! Final smackdown! Winner eats loser!!!!

To .BatteryPoison. : I agree with you on the anime. I have a lot of friends that will watch anime simply because it is anime... sometimes they're horrible, but some are really interesting. Have you seen Akira? One of the things I've noticed about anime and other animated films is that you don't expect tha violence to affect you... but it sometimes does...

to Tstone: I just saw that movie as well. I liked the ending... sort of. At least it was a suprise.

Right now I'm watching The Birds. I love Alfred Hitchcock.

I'll do what I can, but the friggin GPDM has one disadvantage: HE DOESN'T DO A FRIGGIN THING! NOT ONE! He stands in front of a lamp in the forest, the prick never moves, and THAT'S what they cut to every so often to remind you it's supposed to be scary!

See this?

See how this puppet thing is moving? It's doing TEN TIMES WHAT THE FRIGGIN WENDIGO BASTARD DID!

Just saw "The Village" and even though TStone's scathing review.....I rather liked. ::ducks TStone's evil stare::

I like some of M. Night Shamaylan's movies, I think "Signs" would have to be one of his better ones. Right now I am watcing the dvd set of the second season of "The Simpsons". It's not really a movie but, hell, it's fun.

That's not a puppet! That's a dog trying to shake off it's costume!! Of course it's going to be doing more than scary ol' GPDM!!!

Just re-watched "Manos-The Hands Of Fate".....*urgh*. Possibly the worst film ever (actually, that would be...oh, I know there's gotta be a worse one out there somewhere!). But since we decided to remake it shot-for-shot, we've gotta study it.....*urgh*

Well, I still stand beside Cabin Fever being the worst recent movie, and Plastic Deer Man or Killer Rat Dogs doesn’t come close to that pile of steaming shit, but if it’s quirky no budget fx implementation we’re talking about, I’d like to one up both Loy and Al by reminding them of the little gem known as, DarkWolf.

Directly prior to the transformation scenes we had a perfectly fine naked female body boobs akimbo, and then erectile dysfunction would set in as a computer overlay warped her image in bits of code and began to distort it via some photoshop wannabe program. It’s so bad there are times (most times) when you can actually see the wireframes. Give me Plastic Deer Man or Killer Rat Dogs any day.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, draws you out of a story quicker than someone cartoonizing a perfectly fine set of milkshakers.

Eye’s, you’re more than entitled to your opinion. I’ll admit I wanted to like this movie, and trying hard not to give any spoilers away, I want you to step back with me to the ending.

Was it a surprise?

Yeah, and it was a nice surprise until…step forward to the beginning and view the meal time table. Look at all the people of varying ages sitting around partaking of the bounty of the land…and ask yourself…where did they come from?

The ending and twist hinges upon a few things, most notably, secrecy and a select number of people knowing the secret. The movie gives us 8 secret keepers in the form of town Elders, who originally settled the area. 4 men and 4 women. The secret twist doesn’t work when you factor in everyone else in the town; the science of the thing is off, and that alone ruined the movie for me. Either they fucked a helluva lot in the begening, or someone made a trip to Baby's R Us, and even that doesn't explain the varriences in all the ages. It could have been a great movie, had it stayed in the formula of its design.

Just watched "Les invasions barbares", a remarkably good Québecois film. My French isn't good enough to have understood all of it, especially since there were some pretty linguistically complicated conversations going on there (yay for wordplay!), but it was excellent. Lots of interesting juxtapositions of ideals, and characters you could actually believe in. If your local video store has a decent foreign section, try and find it. At some point I'm going to watch it again with subtitles though, cause I know some of the bits I missed were interesting.

OMG that's so friggin awesome! Holy sheep shanks man, that will be fun! I read a really detailed 'behind the scenes' about that movie, pretty interesting read. One of many questions I now have are:
1) Are you gonna focus the camera, or go with the original?
b) Will the opening and closing car shots be just as long and boring and pointless?
III) Who is gonna be Torgo?

Apparently the rumour about John Reynold's (the actor who played Torgo) suicide had nothing to do with the movie. Rumour was he wore those goat leg things backwards, not knowing the proper way to don them, and because of this was in such agonizing pain he couldn't deal with it. He died before the movie was debuted, at least he was spared that.

Yeah thanks Loy, his theme song is stuck in my head now...

TStone: I agree. M. Night had most of it covered except for that part. That and eventually the gene pool would need outside assistance.

Last movie I saw was American Splendor. I never read the comic before, but I just might pick it up sometime, 'cos this movie really warmed my heart. I like films about negative pricks, and I just lo-ove to see Paul Giamatti do a stellar job in a role like that. The cuts and interviews with the real Harvey Pekar didn't really work for me, it fragmented the whole experience a little more than neccessary. Still, I had a fun time, with the occasional bittersweet tug at the heartstrings.

Al-When I said "shot-for"shot", I actually meant "shot-for-shot", long takes and all, and my buddy Ryan's playing Torgo, who watches the place while the master's gone. We figured that since all these cool horoor films have been getting remade horribly recently, we'd start off with a crappy film and make our version just as horrible. Just hoping the odd attempted groping scene turns out just as awesome.

Korellyn-You should check out "Decline Of The American Empire", which is the film that "Barbarian Invasions" is a sequal to. Really great movie....actually, you should check out Denys Arcand's films in general, since they're great and nobody else seems to know them at all. He also did "Jesus Of Montreal" (which I think is his best film), "Stardom", and "Love And Other Catastrophes".

Tstone-thanks for breaking my heart
but is it any "Rock And Roll Nightmare", where Thor gets turned into an angel of light (I never knew that angels wore nothing but spiked-leather thongs and bracelets, capes, and teased out hair...the things you learn everyday) and fights against the muppet devils?

That movie is great! None of my friends would watch it with me, though... they said it was boring and depressing. OH- Well.

Anyway, I think the worst movie I have ever seen was This Island Earth. That's why i love the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Movie. Tom Servo's the best.
