Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Well I don't know what your genre is, but if you like black metal, Immortal, Anorexia Nervosa and Thy Serpent are seriously VERY good. And if you like death metal I'd say listen to Decapitated. Their double bass drums is seriously earblasting...
ehm... well if you want to get to know some interesting bands I suggest you listen to www.blackmetalradio.com and just brows through the tracklists a bit. There must be something you like...
But Anorexia Nervosa is a band I personally highly recommand, dispite of the bandname...

New metal?
What are you fuckers talking about? Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are the only metal bands worth anything in this world.

An excellent website for finding new metal bands is http://www.metalstorm.ee
It has everything from Heavy Metal to Gothic Metal to Grindcore Metal to Death Metal and many other genres of metal in-between.
A lot of gothic metal I really like currently was discovered thanks to this website.
You should have a good look on here.

I always thought New Metal was Limp Bizkit/Papa Roach/Linkin Park
The stuff that was too commercial to be metal or tough enough to be punk.

Elder-it's much easier to say ""that shit sucks".
Some bands I'd suggest-
Wormwood-their myspace says "soundtrack to the apocalypse", and holy fuck you better believe it. These guys are the heaviest band I've seen since the Swans. My favorite metal band since Teen Cthulhu
http://www.wormwood.us/
Book Of Black Earth + Doomsday:1999-When Teen Cthulhu broke, there were many a sad, sad fist pumping, black denim wearing, short hair and eyeliner sporting, hormonally aggresive kid around the world. However, the remaining members formed 2 awesome bands. Book Of Black Earth are the more straight ahead aggresive as fuck band, who can make their guitars sound like weird synths whenever they play live, and Doomsday:1999 are the more fun (?) of the two whose shows make you bounce around and bash your head against tall concrete posts.
Doomsday:1999-http://www.rockandroleplay.com/
Book Of Black Earth-http://bookofblackearth.net/
and because your life is incomplete without it-http://www.metalupdate.com/interviewcthulhu.html
Bloodhag-4 dudes who look like mormon missionaries singing short, sharp, shock songs about sci-fi writers whilst throwing books into the audience. They did a tour of libraries (no, I'm serious). As they always say, the faster you go deaf, the more time you have to read.
http://www.bloodhag.com/
Akimbo-I don't understand how these guys can tour so much, write songs, AND leave semi-normal lives. No, really. These guys are on the bus around 11 months out of the year. This makes me sad. Why? Because their live shows are fucking amazing, and them touring so much means they won't play here so often.
http://www.livetocrush.com/
The Abodox-quirky hyperactive kids who love the Byrds and Kreator. All you can say is "Fuck", "Yeah", and "!!!!!!". You wanna hate them because of their description, and because they look like another bunch of soldiers in the white belt brigade, and then you see them live and you DO hate them because they're so much more awesome than you could ever dream of being.
(all these guys have myspace profiles also, in their links don't work)

If you like power metal there are many bands I can recomend, from the more well known helloween, iced earth, hammerfall, nevermore (though somtimes they cant really be called power), and blind guradian, to the lesser known Dream Evil.
if you want a very different sound, then the avant garde band Fantomas is a good thing to lsiten to (dont let the fact that slayers drummer is a member, the sound is COMPLEATLY different). It was formed from two of the members of mr bungle....who I dont think can be confined to a genre.
If you want to go to somthing lighter, then the bands moi dix mois, and newer dir en grey albums, have a metal twist to the usual j rock that japan is known for (e.g. x japan. malice mizer, and old dir en grey, all great bands, though maybe to light for what you are looking for.)

Hehe that would be Nu Metal. There's nothing punk about them since it's mostly a mix of rap and metal.

For stoner rock/doom, I suggest Spirit Caravan, Goatsnake, Clutch, Orange Goblin, Slo Burn, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Karma to Burn, the Atomic Bitchwax, Acid King, and of course, Kyuss.

If you can give some metal bands you already like, I'd be happy to give you recommendations. Some of my favorite newer (i.e. last 10-15 years) metal bands are:
Ahab (funeral doom)
Alchemsit (progressive metal)
The Devin Townsend Band (progressive metal)
Dark Funeral (technical black metal)
Bethlehem ("dark metal" [i.e. insane black/doom])
Enslaved (black metal w/synth influence)
Ewigkeit (progressive space-rock/death metal)
and if you want to go further back, here are some older, yet still relevant metal favorites:
Burzum (black metal/ambient)
Deinonychus (black/doom)
Celtic Frost (black/thrash)
Panzerchrist (brutal black/death)
Exodus (thrash)
Darkthrone (black metal)
Cathedral (sludge/stoner)
Demilich (technical death)
But really, give me something to work with. Tell us who you like, and this will be much easier.

Doom/Funeral - MDB, Saturnus, Swallow The Sun, Novembers Doom, Slumber, Shape of Despair
Gothic Metal - Theatre of Tragedy, Draconian
Power Metal - Masterplan, Axenstar
Melo Death - Amon Amarth, In Flames, Dark Tranquility (the big 3 swedish melodeath bands, I don't listen much to any of them but they are AMAZING live)
Black Metal - Emperor, Deathspell Omega (french black with gregorian chanting! Check em out), Windir, Darkthrone
J-Metal - Dir En Grey (mmmmh, so good, can't wait for their show. How they mix it up and play some early songs as well), Moi Dix Moi, BLOOD
J-Rock - ACID, Merry, GazettE, Kagrra,, Miyavi
Mostly listen to the J-Rock/J-Metal and Doom though, along with the post-punk/post-hardcore/metalcore, not much room for death metal and the like.
"gothic metal: anathema, darkwell, evanescence, exoterick, HIM, lacuna coil, marilyn manson, octavia sperati, opeth"
I can't believe you said that...
Anathema - Death/Doom, now: Alt Rock (the new album "A Natural Disaster" is great)
Marilyn Manson - Debated, definately NOT Gothic Metal though
HIM - Does not share any simmilarities whatsoever to anything called Gothic Metal.
Opeth - Alt-rock with Death Metal influences, NOT Gothic Metal
Evanescence - Symphonic Metal flirting with pop (all Symphonic bands do, in fact..)
Lacuna Coil - Not Gothic Metal, but not *that* far away compared to the others you mentioned.
I haven't heard the rest so I can't really comment on that.

Excellent recommendation, Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice has to be the best Black Metal album I have heard, it's amazing.
Rest of the list is good too.

Take a listen to Lurker Of Chalice's eponymous album, near psychedelic Black Metal. Insanely depressive.

There's a couple I would suggest:
Old Man's Child (death/symphonic black metal)
Throes of Dawn (Black metal?)
Draconian (gothic metal...I think)
Shade Empire (Black metal)
Naglfar (black metal, warning: extremely disturbing/obscene lyrics)
Job For A Cowboy (Death/Black metal mix)
Children of Bodom (Black Metal)
Disturbed (Metal)
Iron Maiden (Heavy Metal)
Pantera (heavy metal)
Megadeth (heavy metal)
Satyricon (Black metal)
Many others I am too lazy to mention now.
Okay, maybe that was more than a couple. My bad...
