Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL.

What define's "gothic rock" and other goth related genre's?

This is a question that's been bugging me for a while, how do you know what's a "gothic" band and what's not? The main reason for this is the amount of people who say marilyn Manso is gothic, and others don't. Same with slipknot. Same with early AFI... etc. So if someone could define to me what a "gothic" band is, I'd give you lots of internet-based-hugs and cookies. <3

I base Gothic Rock on introspective/tongue-in-cheek lyrics, an icy (but not strictly bleak) soundscape, multiple-layered arrangements, reverb'd bass drum and smack-snare and an overall sense of intellect.

The problem with Manson, Slipknot and other mallgoth bands are that they lack the sincerity and existentialism that's usually prevalent in Trad. Goth.

Everyone just kind of bases the genres on what people in the media or the promoter or the band says. Some just base it to what they think the genre is. It really depends if you think for yourself or just listen to what others say. It might take forever to find out who ever came up with these genres. I mean it might not, but then again, good luck with that.

I think that Slipknot are more HC then Goth. But really. And MM is....whel...an asshole.
Just kidding. Why define music. Who gives a fuck. Why not just listen music? I like punk and goth and metal and belive it or not jazz, and tones of other stuff.

'sensibility'

It's the only common thread that links the diverse likes of, say, the Sisters of Mercy or Fields of the Nephilim with the bands like Dead Can Dance or Tindersticks. Worlds apart musically speaking, but conjoined in the womb of existential despair!

gawd, showing my vintage there...

Our culture has become adept at manufacturing any number of acts that look and sound like the real thing, in all manner of genres; a veritable simulacra of sincerity, with the express purpose of extracting cash from YOU. Who can tell which is which any more? What constitutes 'real' or 'genuine', anyway? What does that even mean?

Well, if it talks to your spirit, if the words and moods penetrate deeply, if you can feel the sincerity of the singer and her voice, if you detect the motion of a discarnate soul at the edges of your aural sphere...

...then that's what you've been looking for.
