| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

I play piano/keyboards, learning guitar (almost learned it). It's a problem for me to get instruments (does infliation ring a bell?) so I think I'll focus on my passion - singing. Not that cheap pop squeak, but professional classical singing...
If I were perfect, I would play the viola, keyboards, bass, guitar, piano and turntables.

I would love to be in a band, but I'm not sure if anyone would want me. I'd have to improve my piano skills and freshen up my vocals a bit. Nobody wants a floutist in a rock band lol. Also, I have more of a "Broadway-style" voice than anything, or so people tell me as I was in musical theatre in jr. high & high school.

You can do cool things with a flute beyond classical music. (I'm a flautist too.) There's black tape for a blue girl, Jethro Tull, and one album by Cathedral...three groups which have virtually nothing in common, but they all use a flute.

True, but most people don't recognize that. I still prefer to sing above anything else, and since it's impossible to sing and play flute at the same time, I think I ought to get better at piano so I can play my own music whilst singing. I could always record flute ahead of time, though.
So how long have you been playing flute? What's your favorite thing to play?

I play cello. I played with the Australian Youth Orchestra when I was still at school (about a century ago) and have played in quartets since then. I was with a quartet for a while that did a lot of weddings and funerals.
I'm going to start piano lessons after Christmas. I've been listening to a lot of Dresden Dolls and Tori Amos.

Oooh cello sounds beautiful! I had a brief stint with the harp when I was teaching music lessons to some kids I used to babysit, but harps are so damned expensive...
Yay @ Dresden Dolls (have you seen their website? The layout is awesome)! I recently discovered them too & they're awesome. All of my favorite female singers play piano (Sarah McLachlan, Amy Lee, Jewel, & Amanda), so that's part of my inspiration for re-learning piano as well.

I play guitar, sing, and write in Address Unknown, a deathrock-glam band. Of course, I'm currently the only member, but I'm having fun!
Oh, and I have a basic Marshall distortion amp and a Schecter Diamond Series electric gitbox.
(If you'd like to hear some of my crap, go there: http://myspace.com/addressunknown23 )

Is that your singing as well? That sounds fantastic.
I've been playing Bluegrass Folk. Yeah, yeah.........let me hear it.
Anyways, my gear consists of a Fender Stratocaster and a Peavey amp which I bought at some old used guitar shop. Plus my father bought me a Martin Acoustic, which I play most of the time.
I play a lot of instruments. A bit of a Jack-of-all-trades you might say.

Mmm, been a while since I picked up my axe. It's a Mexican made Strat, red with white pick board...looks a lot like Mark Knopfler's guitar, if any of you know who he is, and if you do, well awesome! Basic Gorilla amp, don't remember the details since like I said, it's been a while. Never played in a band, but did some jam sessions with my friends. Mostly blues and jazz. How un goth, hehe. That will be a theme of mine. My next goal is to afford a replica ES-355 with Sunburst finish, so I can rock out like Clapton! Yeah!

I'm in a band.I do lead vocals. We're still in an experimental stage. We've decided not to settle with just one style of music since none of us listen to one type of music.Currently looking for a bassit so we can reall start working on the lyrics i wrote. We haven't played any shows, but we probably will if we become good enough. It's going well right now.We still have to figure out how completely random people are gonna play well together.

Yeah, sorry, I should've quoted you. Are you in that band? Which member are you, Marebito?

Tried it once but it all ended in mayhem. No one could agree so we went our own way and the band ended.

the trick to keeping a band together, is a whole lot of effort and compromise...and a tiny dash of ego stroking...

I've been playing for nearly 6 years. I'm fond of baroque music. And modern avant garde. A lot of other things.

I do vocals. I've been wanting to start an industrial/ebm/metal band for a while now, and I was wondering how to go about it?

i started by puttiing myself on this site called musolist...its like a search engine for musicians. i then posted flyers with the specifics in the two main instrument shops in town. that seemed to work for me.
otherwise go to shows and speak to the organisers ask them to hook you up with people in ready formed local bands, they ALWAYS know other people in bands...

ha ha...no, seriously. If you dont try, you wont know. There are always little unknown bands that play crappy little joints for years...those are the guys that can teach you the most...even if you make a nuisance outta yourself, you'll be proving you've got spunk. People always know other people who are into the same things as them...

Now I need to find places that play local bands that aren't totally extremely far away from me :P

good thing to do is look out for gig guides...they always used to have one on one of our late night radio stations after that, it was word of mouth, and flyers...
but anyway, if you have any underground rock/punk/metal clubs they usually have quite helpful staff....also check piercing or tattoo parlours for flyers.

Lol. I hate living in a suburb. And I hate that no one is aware what industrial and EBM are. :P
And I refuse to do a solo project. Hah.
Thanks for the tips, man. Next ime I'm in Harvard Square, I'll check out the piercing/tattoo parlor.
