I dont know what everyone is getting so worked up over. The recording industry is doing the same thing that it always has .. making money. Thats it. There will always be cattle waiting to be herded into a "scene", and emo just happens to be it for a couple years. Might as well brace yourself for further attempts to exploit the counter culture as the industry expands their target audience.

The only highpoint of this new emo scene is that, just as someone else said, it took the heat off of goth. Years ago people would constantly make goth jokes and cracks that I would argue and counter time and time again. Now, I basically leave it up to these scene/emo kids to do what they wish. The true emos are staying in the dark, however, and so nothing is actually being done about it. It's kind of sad.
Om3ga, get in the kitchen and make my damn sandwich, bitch.
No, don't retort. I said get in the mother effing kitchen.

A few years ago the band "Weezer " was a good example of emo - the music, the attitude and the look. Same goes for "Jimmy Eat World".
What connection does this have with the current trend known as emo, let alone Goth? How did this unjustified merging occur?
|
Ya got me. I'm at a loss as to how that all came about. Could be worse, I suppose... it was certainly worse when Mansonites were called 'goths'. Better to be mistaken for an emo kid than a Mansonite. It's just that friends I knew way back who were into emo were about as far from looking or acting like 'goths' (even stereotypical ones) as you could get. Pop culture does some strange things sometimes.

It really sucks that you went into the whole sexuality thing. I was going to be cynical and say that I don't call them emos. I call them faggots.
Stereotypes only exist because there is a slight truth to them. Where that slight truth comes from for emos, I've not a clue... But then again, I don't care...weeeeeeeeeee...I'm sorry, I'm tired and it's new years eve and I'm not even at any parties or anything. Really boring.

Not too long ago, that word was censored with r.ape and l.olita. You know, since it's hate speech.
Or at least, I think it was... I could be thinking of another discriminatory slur.
If it WAS that word, I wonder why the censors allow it?

Yes, I do recognize the difference between true emo, and "scene" as we can call this trendy movement. I can't say there's a single thing I like about scene, except that they do get antagonized more that goths now. Not that it makes a difference when I'm mistaken for an emo scene kid -_- How I detest that.
No one at my school could differentiate between the two, but then that's what it's like to be away from the mainstream. It isn't common knowledge, and I grudgingly admit that the confusion can't be blamed. Maybe a little.
I hate their pants though.

Umm, I can't tell between a scene kid and a true emo? How can you? I'm not very educated in that subject since I never really cared too much

If you read the post, then you would be able to.
A "true emo" does NOT dress the same way the scene kids do. At all. They have a more "normal" style of dressing. There's nothing about their attire that really sets them apart from the norm, unless it's an individual thing.

Wow. What can one say to this, when your user name says it all?
And Pyre- very well stated. Muchly concur.
It's easy to insult something for it's looks, race, gender... what you can easily see. It takes some work to truly insult one for their intelligence and person. (Looks up st Feeb)... some take less work than others.

Yes, I think that our modern world is grudgingly conceding that homos are people too. And I think nearly everyone on this board is against hate speech, in one way or another, and many of us are even adamantly pro-gay rights.
Keep your goddamn laws out of my bedroom.

I know this is an old topic, but I felt the need to ask.
Emo as a music style didn't have a subculture. Emotive hardcore was just hardcore with more emotive lyrics, and the people who liked it were just people who liked Hardcore.
So, in retrospect, I think it would be fair to say that although the emo culture is completely different to the emo music, or at least the original emo music, it's still emo.

It had more than just more emotive lyrics. It can be compared to blues in the fact that they actually tried to CONVEY the pain that they felt.
Cowpunk is to punk as emo is to hardcore.
Just for the record, cowpunk is a fusion of blues/country and punk.

Ok, I don't know if they're emo... But I hate the new Neopunk fashion thing... where they wear the really tight pants and the funny hair going in all directions...Don't wear tight pants if it's going to make you look like one of those Fruit of the loom tv ad guys... (ya knooooww like an apple)
Whatever happened to dressin with class...at least it's better than the pants off the ass thing...maybe I'm just old fashioned...
But seriously.. Keep dressing that way so I can laugh at you...

Tight-tight-tight trousers only irritate me when the person wearing them has over half their ass sticking out at the back. Specially when they know their ass is hanging out, and they don't pull their trousers up because they think it makes them look sexy. Wtf?

Good to hear it! I am Bisexual, and even tho i havent had a girlfriend, and have had boyfriends. I find it hard to ask both sexes out. As i've always been asked out, but if i see someone, its hard to tell and i end up not bothering. Especially that i onced asked a girl out... and i think she was going to freak major. So even tho i am Bi, i havent been with any girls. Sadly.
Back to topic...
Ok i get that these "scene people" call themselfs emos, but what excatly are emo's? I've never gotten it?
I dont like chavs mind you... my town seems to have tons of them, and they're attitudes agaisnt peopel... GRRR!!!

Meh. I realized I was bi when it dawned on me that I was more than comfortable with entertaining my GF by performing on hot bois. The one thing I noticed though, was how gay guys don't seem to like me so much because I'm not "gay" enough.
And this whole emo thing... help, it's getting annoying. To me, the lines are blurred for emo and punk and goth when it comes to fashion. Especially for emo and goth. In the end, it would more than likely depend on the music they listen to and their activities. But, in the end, I don't really care. I'm getting fairly tired of pre-requisites that must be met to be called a certain label. I've only ever had to correct someone once about emo and goth and which one I was and that was because he really couldn't tell the difference visually. How you guys can tell is beyond me. I think I could show you guys a pic of me and a pic of a similarly dressed emo and honestly, you probably wouldn't be able to tell a difference. But I think that's because I skirt all the "genres" of the goth sub culture from Industrial to Romantic. What ever happened to just being goth?

EMO is just a slang term. Nothing more, I hate the way it's been compared to goth. Goth is an asesthic, philosophy with dark and poetic maintence. All of a sudden, because of the shitty explotation, we've got the gap wearing, speckeled, pop punk version of us-which we don't need. Emo is not really (or shouldn't be) a genre, much less a subculture.

Is that how you see it? Seriously, I mean no offense to anyone here, but lots of you guys look like "emos". I mean that in no offensive way. I simply have a very hard time distinguishing the two unless a goth goes all out. So, in the end I generally see goths or emos that I don't know as potentially either one, depending on their attitudes and personalities. Because that's the best way I can distinguish them. An emo, normally comes off kinda childish and then tries to bust out some kind of music that is very easily known to not be goth. *shrugs* So our style was stolen. First it was Mansonites, then came emos. Our fashion sense will always be copied and assimilated into bastardizations of the sub culture.
Now damn it, someone come over here and cuddle me or something. I'm having withdraw.

I know, it was stolen, ripped off is more like it. It was because they knew that emotive hardcore was limited, like this fag here (I'm not the one to use profanity, but once you see this picture you'll see what I mean): http://people.freebsd.org/~ssouhlal/stuff/me.jpg
I'm not the only one bitching about this.

If I could see it, I would better know. You know, it comes with the territory. We must simply be what we are. Emos will not be the last great rip off of goth. There will be another disgusting thing come forth that will be worse. I dunno, sometimes I think I take it really too seriously when people refer to me as Emo. I don't think I should want to serve them in a pastry to their families, but still.
If you really think about it, all this "emo" propaganda you see on shit like Youtube and Myspace is done by people who is confused on what goth and emo is and so, they usually depict a goth acting like some emo teeny bopper.
I've been called emo on-line mainly by people who seriously do NOT know what an emo or a goth is. I shrug it off then and continue doing what I do.
