Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

David Bowie
What a shame not to find a thread about one of those people who had a major influence on early goth bands (Bauhaus, for instance)... So, I think Bowie's a musical genious. Anyone else like him? What's your favourite song/ album?
I absolutely adore "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" and all the songs on it. The song "Ziggy Stardust" has been running re- runs in my head for ages...

David Bowie is magnificent. I suppose you won't find a thread on him because the kids here are mainly one-dimensional underagers. The legendary Batcave club used to play mainly glam-rock until it developed its darker aesthetic.
Bowie is the Godfather of Goth without actually being Goth. He had the dark sense of humour, the glam, and the androgyny. And not to mention "The Hunger"...
I love "Low"...

I love Bowie too; I can't believe how many people are shocked when I tell them he was very influential to gothic music. His favorite tracks of mine are "Fame", "Suffagrette City", and "Panic in Detroit", though I probably only love the last one because Christian Death covered it.
Did any of you know there's a comilation album of gothic bands covering Bowie songs? It's called "Goth Oddity: a Tribute to David Bowie".

I like Bowie but I LOVE Iggy Pop and The Stooges. They were/are one of the best bands ever.

Bowie was a major influence on all modern music. Everyone should pick up some of his early works to truly appreciate his brilliance. Check him out in "The Prestige" great movie and a great performance by him.

I spent nearly all of last Wednesday sitting in a car and listening to Best of Bowie over and over again.
I was raised on David Bowie thanks to my mother. Changes is one of my favourite songs ever, and my life's theme song at the moment. But my other favourites include Fame and Ziggy Stardust. The Ziggy Stardust cover by Bauhaus, in fact, played a major role in my introduction to gothic rock.

Which duet do you think was better Queen/Bowie Under Pressure or Beatles/Bowie Major Tom? I'm torn between the two

David Bowie is not a musical genius...
David Bowie is a musical GOD.
I own just about every Bowie album I could get my hands on. Ziggy Stardust is one of my all time favorite albums. I was actually named after David Bowie's guitarist, Mick Ronson.

Beatles/Bowie "Major Tom"?? Never heard it! Do you mean to say that bowie and the Beatles got together to record a version of "Space Oddity"? Sounds unlikely... But then again so does Bowie/Bing Crosby duetting on a Christmas carol, but it happened...

Wow, I have that CD too; It's a really excellent compilation! "Chenges" is also (one of) my theme song(s), and I also discovered Bowie through Bauhaus' cover of Ziggy. Mum and I were listening to it in the car one day and she was like, "David Bowie!". I was like, "What?", and she was like, "That's a cover of David Bowie!". I was like, "REALLY?!".

That post just recently inspired me to make a t- shirt that says "I believe in God. His name's David Bowie". Heh.
Anyway, are you serious? Crosby and Bowie?! That really seems crazy. Need to find. Even though I hate carols.

The new EP from Clan Of Xymox will have a cover of "Heroes", apparently.

David Bowie is just so damn cool. My favorite songs are "Diamond Dogs" (Beck did a kickass cover of that song), "Suffragette City", and "China Girl"

The "ChangesOneBowie" compilation album is a classic. Not one bad song on it. Recently can't get enough of the track "Modern Love" off "Let's Dance" (Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar). Guess it's because I'm a lover of rock music in general, and have been playing it over the silly season. Don't know his early stuff very well. Before he became a superstar.
Yeah, he was good in Labyrinth. Fit the part well. But Jennifer Connelly stole the show for me. She got me rock hard at 10 years old!

Labyrinth was lots of fun and Bowie was cool in it, but has anyone seen any of his other acting turns?
How about "The Man Who Fell to Earth", "The Hunger", "The Linguini Incident", or "The Prestige"?

Man, really?
This thread hasn't existed yet?
Well, I won't be redundant, but yes, for the record, Bowie inspired the bands who would inspire the bands you call goth rock.
Love him, or hate your roots.
