"grow up"?
Who, exactly, are you? And what makes you think you know jackshit about me or any other member of this board?
And why, in general, do people say things like "grow up" and expect anyone to listen to anything they've said? Why use sarcasm and condescension and generalize about a whole board full of people, and expect anyone to hear your message?
And before you play that whole "stop being a hypocrite" card, I was perfectly civilized (and even, in my opinion, amusing) until I was personally singled out by this person. Then I defended myself, and I did so without calling anyone any names.

About that post, I'm extremly sorry. I went back and reread what you posted and found I had misconstruded the meaning. I read to fast and typed without thinking. For that, I am sorry.

I really WANT to like you. You have such a cute name. And we all know that "gay" is a slang term that is often used by people who aren't aware of how hurtful and hateful it was, so I was going to make a joke and move on... The suicide thing was a little much, but your explanation (I merely don't want to die by some ill-fated ailment, instead I want to be in charge of my own parting) made sense. I mean, who doesn't love Harold and Maude?
I'd like not to dislike you. I really would.

Because people don't have that much control over themselves.

You're making it kind of difficult. You do realize how hurtful using hate speech to demean a minority can be, right? Even if it's unintentional? And you can't have thought that making an offhand, careless suicide reference would go over well. My best friend shot himself 2 years ago, and now every time I hear "suicide", it takes me back to right after he first died. And when it's used flippantly and carelessly, it seems that bringing me back to that time was just unnecessary and hurtful.
I hope you can understand that.

I don't know if I'm going to college mearly cause I can't afford it. My music taste does the opposite of self-infliction but is more of therapy. I understand why some of you would not like MCR for not everyone has the same music interests. However, they do not promote self- harm but provides many with a sort of release and at Reading it is true they got bottled but Gerard never got hit in the head and knocked unconcious. Most of them are not gay but love to get OMG offended by that "gay" adjective. I like men and I haven't got any problem with the use of the word, it's not like she is going to impale 2 little gay kids.
About suicide, I don't understand why not wanting to live up to 80 years when you're just there doing not much is a bad thng. That's my personal opinion, if someone wants to live, that's perfect, but you can't disgrace a person for their view on living in this rotten world.o-o.

If you don't think that using the word "gay" in a negative way is a problem, so be it. For my reasons on why it is offensive to me, here's a quote from earlier in the thread:
Quote:
|
Do you understand what you convey when you use the word "gay" as a derogatory term? You see, "gay" means homosexual. You knew that, right? Well, one day, someone decided that since "homosexual" was such a negative thing, it should become an insult. Thus, "that's so gay". Every time you use gay in a derogatory way you manage to subliminally convey that homosexuality is a negative thing.
|
That doesn't mean I'm going to get "OMG offended" every time someone uses it. I'll probably just make a joke about how inanimate genderless objects can't really have a sexual orientation. I do think it's important to make people aware of the connotations of what they're saying, however.
Do you remember coming out? How old were you? I was 15. I was 15, and "gay" was a word my classmates used to describe something that was stupid or loathsome. Attaching that label to myself was difficult, given its connotations in my mind. What was more difficult was telling people, and being scared that they were then going to see me as stupid, loathsome, or disgusting. I would prefer that younger generations not have to go through that, so although I don't advocate censorship, I would like to promote awareness about that.

It's okay but I find it surprising how some of you are dealing with her, she is not homofobic, and you're dealing with her the way and homofobic person would deal with a gay person. It's just they way I see it. =/

Many of the people here have had people close to them commit suicide, and there's a lot of angsty scene kids running around taking suicide lightly. I understand that they find it offensive.

It could make sense in context, but is that what you meant?

I know and people close to me have attempted and succeded in doing so. I don't think she is scene, bad music taste alone doesn't make a person a poser, just a little ignorant. Pretending to be suicidal is disgusting, but I don't see her trying to get more attention that the one she has already got because of answering some questions related to death - . -.

If you want to see it that way, go ahead. It seems pretty obvious to me how you meant the word "gay", just as it was obvious that you were misusing it. If your answers had seemed positive and happy, we would maybe have thought you were using "gay" to mean happy. If your answers had homosexual references in them, it would be obvious that you were using "gay" to mean homosexual. However, your answers were just mediocre, and everyone could tell you meant "gay" in a negative way.

You spelled 'homophobic' wrong.
Nobody is treating her as bashers would treat a homosexual. We're simply trying to let her know that when making an introduction, it would be advised to minds your Ps and Qs until you know the group better. And that using certain words around certain people isn't always such a good idea for reasons of the peoples' own.

I wasn't saying SHE is scene, I was only trying to explain why people around here generaly don't like anyone that mentions suicide in their intro...

No, because they were mediocre it was obvious how you were using the word "gay", thus no one assumed anything. No one said you were doing it on purpose, they just said it was wrong. Why don't you understand that?

Because your saying I meant gay as 'homosexual' when I meant gay as 'happy'. How can you decide what I meant, when I'm the one that typed the words?

a.) It's "you're". I know I'm nitpicking, so feel free to disregard that, but I thought I would at least bring it to your attention.
b.) I can't "decide" what you meant, but obviously the meaning of a word changed based on context, right? For instance, if I say my aunt is a bow-hunter, it's obvious to all parties involved that she doesn't hunt hairthings or people that bend at the waist.
