Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

"Grandparents" of goth
Well, I was wondering, which artists/ bands do you think has had the greatest influence on goth? (Well, we all know about Siouxsie and Bauhaus and those people, but before them...?)

Joy Division? I think I read something about the roots of gothic music in Wikipedia. David Bowie and The Velvet Underground come to my mind =/.

The whole New Romantic movement, to which we have to thank for Depeche Mode also.

If you want to go back a bit you can say Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper as well as Bowie.

I guess this topic is somewhat discussed- to- death already, so, um, sorry.
What about glamrock? I mean, except for Bowie. I'm quite sure I've read somewhere that this was a rather influential movement.
The reason that I ask is not of ignorance, but because I am going to write about the people influencing the first goth bands, and don't want to miss any

Dinah Cancer is definitely one of my Fairy Gothmothers.
Nico has been named before... she certainly had the whole looking dead thing down in the last years of her life. But then that might have been the heroin...
I think Marc Bolan might be in there somewhere too.

Bowie jumps to my mind. Alice Cooper too, but they were mentioned early.

Why out of spite? I distinctly seem to remember it mentioned on Pete Scythe's site that he played at the Batcave... and I'd say a lot of his work has this gothic atmosphere and, well, when it comes to the lyrics...

I'm betting Rozz listened to Black Sabbath in his childhood as well... but I'm not going to name Ozzy as a Grandparent of Goth.
But, they could be considered Great-uncles or something like that.

Ozzy would definitely be the creepy great-uncle, you know the one at the family reunion snorting coke and passing joints out to the little kiddies?
Seriously though, Bowie and Depeche Mode definitley come to mind...

i disagree as well on the alice cooper. he was one of the first 'heavy metal' artists. maybe his image was somehow goth? although bands like venom pretty much did the same stuff he did on stage, just with goat heads.
definitely the velvet underground. or other punk bands that couldn't cut it as punk.

Bowie, Lou Reed, the Doors, Kiss, and even Alice Cooper. The truth is, bands like Alice Cooper and Kiss may have been proto-metal, but let's also not forget that they, as original musicians, had more of a rock sound. I know for certain that both of those bands had influences on the Specimen and Rozz Williams. Also huge influences were the Cramps and the Damned, some of the first bands to use spooky imagery in their music. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.

Leonard Cohen had a strong influence on Andrew Eldritch, and his albums are pretty fuckin' bleak.

Jim Morrison The Lizard king is one I forgot to mention. His vocal style and dark lyrics say it all.

In fact, The Doors were even called "gothic rock" in an article on them way back in the day, 1967... long before that term was truly coined for a genre. Here's the proof:

Certainly "Riders on the Storm" gets my vote for proto-goth. I remember listening to that over and over on my parents' turntable long ago.
