Bravo!
Research information surfaces from someone who preferred to stay quiet. So what did it take for you to talk - a statement you could disagree with?

As for "talking about your problems, so you can get over it. Rather than take Zoloft..." that does work for most depressives. Unfortunately, there are others who have depression due to a chemical imbalance and do need corrective drugs so they can try to lead a somewhat functional life. Sometimes a chemical imbalance can correct itself over the years, but it can also stay a lifetime struggle.

However, I have to say that those being so quiet sure had alot of information to provide towards the conversation. Good points and points of view.

Also, the statement about men vs. women vs. suicide - I only know women who have attempted and been successful. Of the men I know who are depressive, it's a thought, not a process. I am shocked that the suicide rate is higher in men, but I suppose most suicidal women are more likely to hang in there if they have any children. They are also more likely to take their children with them.

I know three people that committed suicide, one that nearly succeeded, and my personal experiences due to a chemical imbalance that I have had for the last 17yrs.

There are lots of reasons for suicide, like knowing you're going to die anyways via disease, etc, or being under so much stress that trudging through it would not be worth getting to the other side, that's another reason. Depression is a common cause, I belive, but its not always that depressed people kill themselves. Its just a way out.

I wasn’t going to mention something, but sometimes people are just messed up too. There was this gal I was trying to be friends with. She always had to play herself up and put other people down. No body liked her, but whatever happened it was never her. She would just pick on people and call them losers and talk about how she was getting straight A’s and everything else.

One night over at the club, this gal ran out into traffic. They tried to revive her, but it didn’t work. She didn't even miss a beat. She was so obviously just trying to hang out with the guy who just lost his girlfriend to be cool. I barely knew the person that just died. I found out what was happening and left. It is so aweful to even speak of people trying to move in on someone when they are down.

A lot of people have committed suicide because they gave up already. Life is already so hard and not turning out the way you want it without some Bitch telling you suck for even trying.

I think frustration is a bigger ingredient in the suicide recipe than depression. Like, if I had to sit through one more friggin' suicide report in my high school english class back in the day ... I might've done the old hang-rope moon-walk. I'm not trying to insult. I just think it's a pretty tired subject. Suicide might not be going anywhere, but it's only responsible for a small ammount of deaths in the big picture and the bulk of media is receives is based on the overall public paranoia. Alot more people "try" to kill themselves than actually get the job done. "Look at me, I'm sad." People need to talk things out.

That’s really very true. People do need to talk out their problems. Also a lot goes for not giving up. I’ve been on academic probation a couple times. Usually for reasons out of my hands like starting late, work or who knows and I’ll fail a class or tow. I don’t stop though. I get back in their, my grades start looking better, because of the extra motivation. Not long after, doing better than before. They big part is not giving up or dropping everything for something new. It really builds character and I feel better about myself for just seeing things through and completing challenges. Some challenges are fruitless. Good idea to cut the cord quickly. I’ve also changed my degree a couple times. People act all weird about it, but finally found something that I’m good at and really works with my interests and life. Who cares what anyone else says. They would have me stick with something that’s miserable. They don’t have to live my life and so other people’s opinions are fairly mute.

An acquaintance from work with whom I sometimes go to lunch is manic depressive and is between psycologists (psychiatrists?), and so she's on meds that don't work for her.
She called me once at home on the verge of bawling, and after some time asked me if I had ever considered dying.

What the hell? Ok, well yes, I could get run over by a bus, or have a stroke or coronary, or suffer some mortal injury, sure.. Hopefully leave a decent-looking corpse anyway. Well that wasn't what she was on about.

She started talking about how she would do it to herself, by OD-ing on her insulin and slipping into a coma.

I gave her some reasons not to do it, and then told her some ridiculous shit that was so absurd it made her laugh. I still wonder if I should have made a phone call. If she ever does that again I will, I think.

On one hand it's none of my business.
On the other hand she did call me.

Opcom:

Eh, that's a rough road. But when she called you, she made it your business. It most likely was a cry for help, anyways.

hopefully i'm never completely happy

I don't know if this is of any use whatsoever, and i'm sure that bloody_tears will have finished the report (as this forum was started over a year ago) but I thought i'd post this because it just popped into my head when I read the title...

The following is an extract from the script to The Matrix Reloaded...
Quote:
Morpheus: We are looking for the Keymaker.
Merovingian: Oh yes, it is true. The Keymaker, of course. But this is not a reason, this is not a `why.' The Keymaker himself, his very nature, is means, it is not an end, and so, to look for him is to be looking for a means to do... what?
Neo: You know the answer to that question.
Merovingian: But do you? You think you do but you do not. You are here because you were sent here, you were told to come here and you obeyed. [Laughs] It is, of course, the way of all things. You see, there is only one constant, one universal, it is the only real truth: causality. Action. Reaction. Cause and effect.
...
Persephone: Where are you going?
Merovingian: Please, ma chérie, I've told you, we are all victims of causality. I drink too much wine, I must take a piss. Cause and effect. Au revoir.
Please don't kill me for quoting the matrix...

*hides*

Xng, you slay me!

On the subject of suicide and depression. Can't say this is common, since I really haven't gone into deep study of the issue, but I can say from my own experiences...

When it comes to thinking about offing myself, it generally only happens when I'm in the "manic" state of my bi-polar disorder. And only if it's really manic. Generally due to a major panic attack, and a feeling of being trapped with no resolution in sight.

I hadn't had an attack like that in about 3 years, now (last one was after I split with my mentally abusive spouse). But I did feel one coming on last week, when all Hell broke loose with my daughter and my fiance at the same time.

Problem was, I was treated for depression for years. It wasn't until I had a really bad attack 3 years ago that someone diagnosed me as bi-polar, and the crying jags, and death-thoughts were part of the manic swing.

As for whether depression is nature, or nurture? Well, it's a proven fact that there is an imbalance of chemicals in the brain that causes depression. But at the same time, I think life events can exacerbate the situation. Or even, a depressive person, not realizing they are depressed, can put themselves in a situation that will exacerbate it. Probably about six one, half dozen another, because if you're depressed, you're not really thinking clearly, which can lead you to make bad choices, which can cause you to become more depressed...and so on, ad infinitum.

Not being judgemental here, but first impressions from what you've said, Xng. It sounds like he had alot of problems that he was trying to mask with the abuse of drugs, and when he cleaned up, all those problems came crashing down on him. It may have looked great on the outside, but there was something else going on, inside.

*hugs* Being the one left behind always hurts like hell, too.

You'll have to miss him evetually though, babe.

It's not fair to him to hate him forever. He just had problems like we all do,no one was there to stop him or catch him in the nick of time like there was for some of us.

i guess what i was trying to say to you, managing only to spit out in a cryptic, fuckin' odd way is - i'm happy you're still here, xnguela.

Nonsense! There's nothing selfish about how you feel. You loved him. -Still- love him.

I think your idea of a garden to honor him is a beautiful idea, too.

Re:Please....

 Depression can sometimes lead to suidcide. I now this from personal experieince. Growing up I lived with a mother who suffered from schizophrenia. Due to the abuse I sank into a depression when I was 14 years old. I tried to kill myself at least 4 times before finally running away from my home situation. I have since then recieved help. The subject of depression and suicide are very close to me. I know of others who suffer from depression but have not tried to kill themselves. So, sometimes it can lead to suicide and other time it can not.
